Contemporary revolution studies cannot be reduced to the comparative analysis of just a few cases—though there is certainly value in in-depth historical comparison, even of just four cases. For example, Mark Beissinger's 2022 book offers a comprehensive statistical analysis of the causes of eruption, success, and outcomes of all revolutionary episodes from 1900 to the present. A recent book by Killian Clarke offers a complementary analysis of counterrevolutions. Beyond this, many others statistically study the causes and outcomes of "maximalist campaigns," which substantially intersect with revolutions (but also include democratization, regime change, national liberation). Erica Chenoweth has made a major contribution to such studies, but she is far from the only one. Notably, Russian sociologists Andrey Korotayev, Leonid Grinin, and their lab at HSE conduct a lot of such large-N analysis of revolutions. They recently published a systematic review of the contemporary studies of unarmed revolutions and "maximalist campaigns" in three parts: doi.org/10.1177/089692… doi.org/10.1177/089692… doi.org/10.1177/089692…

There has now been several dozen color revolutions, and this offers a great opportunity for the analysis of the causes determining whether they succeed or fail to overthrow the reigning regimes. However, most studies I know focus on just a few (e.g. four) examples.

I am not perfect, but I strive to be as even-handed and as factual as possible. Pointing out that Post-Soviet Ukraine was a deeply divided nation is a fact, supported by tons of data, such as any national election results before 2014 (after 2014 election results are useless because the Party of Regions was banned) and many sociological studies. As indicated by very emotional responses to my tweet, this is a fact inconvenient to one side of the conflict, even a “hate fact”. But this doesn’t mean that I support the other side – I don’t pass moral judgments. I neither endorse, nor condemn either side in this conflict, I am merely interested in understanding. The fact, illustrated in the election map (and deeper history, also), is important for understanding what’s happening in Ukraine, because the movement to overthrow Yanukovich had massive support form the “red” part of the map. And all “blue” regions, from Odessa to Kharkov, rebelled against the regime that replaced him. Those rebellions were suppressed by Kiev, except in the two Donbass provinces. This division, thus, is one of the main causes of the current conflict (but not the only one). Ukraine is not the only divided nation on Earth. Two European examples are Czechoslovakia (now two separate countries) and Belgium. Instead of accusing me of bias, Mr. Krawczyk, you should examine your own. You use emotionally laden terms, like “genocidal sociopath”, something I wouldn’t do in characterizing a leader of a major country, whether it is Putin, or Zelenskyy. I understand Polish Russophobia, given Poland’s history and its repeated divisions between Germany and Russia. But try to rise above it if you are interested in understanding this conflict. And don’t project your ideas on me – nowhere do I promote “primitive neo-imperial narratives”. I simply try to understand the world we live in, and that is the trademark of my cliodynamic analysis. To repeat, I don’t claim that I completely succeed in this, but if you find any factual error, please point it out, and if you are right I will correct.
Paweł Krawczyk @[email protected]@kravietz2048

Dear Professor Turchin, I have read most of your books and I value your cliodynamics theory. However, since you developed your 'attrition war' model, you have increasingly become an example of the proverb, 'You can take a man out of Russia, but you can't take Russia out of a man'. I am really disappointed to see you gradually abandoning scientific standards and promoting subtle yet primitive neo-imperial narratives, implying that merely speaking Russian or having voted for someone in 2010 means that these people are eagerly awaiting Putin in 2026.

Protests in Iran: Q&A with RAND Experts Antigovernment protests in Iran that began in late December have escalated into the most serious challenge in decades to its clerical leadership. Demonstrations spread to all 31 provinces, and news reports indicate that thousands of protesters have been killed. Since Jan. 8, there's also been a near-total internet blackout in Iran. The unrest follows a 12-day war with Israel last June in which the United States joined to strike Iranian nuclear facilities. The strain from that conflict compounded years of economic pressure from international sanctions. President Trump has said the United States is considering “very strong options,” and administration officials confirm he has been briefed on potential responses ranging from expanded sanctions to military strikes. Iran has warned it would retaliate against U.S. bases in the region. Meanwhile, notable Iranian reformists, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have closed ranks with hardliners, calling protesters “rioters” and blaming foreign agents. To understand what's driving this crisis—and where it might lead—we asked RAND experts to address the key questions about regime stability, opposition dynamics, economic pressures, and regional implications.

@briebriejoy It seems to me that the entire meaning of the film is concentrated precisely in the final scene: the father is already holding a smartphone (digital control), while the daughter is rushing to a system-sanctioned protest — a gesture of dissent prescribed by the system itself

Reread this this morning and I realized what’s at the core of what bothers me about the politics of OBAA: This movie substitutes the real threat revolutionaries pose to the state (dismantling systems of inequality) with a biracial daughter who threatens one racist’s career advancement. This isn’t a film about Leo’s character being targeted by the state for liberating detention centers or blowing up the power grid or bombing anti-choice Senators’ offices. This is a film about Bob (or rather, his kid) being targeted by a cop because he needs to hide DNA evidence of miscegenation. So he can get a job. In real life, revolutionary movements are snuffed out not because the deep state is obsessed with the racial purity of a cop’s kids. (Lots of white supremacists have POC partner. See eg the killer ICE agent and his Asian wife.) In real life, the deep state hunts you down bc of your *beliefs* and your *practice* of working toward dismantling corrupt and exploitative systems that benefit elites. The film decenters the revolutionary work— quarantining it into the rushed first 30 min of the film before sidelining it so completely that Bob’s revolutionary work becomes irrelevant to the manhunt plot line. (The *real* crime is that Bob is harboring evidence of Lockjaw’s Black girl kink!) It’s like PTA looked around at the world and said ‘mixed race kids are the *real* threat to the world order.’ Which, frankly, is a very common liberal mentality (eg “Barack Obama and other biracial folks are gonna save the world! There will be no inequality when we’re all mixed”).

He could've made a movie about superficially invested "woke" college kids participating in BLM but voting for Biden -- the architect of the modern police state. He could have written a movie that skewered BLM leadership stealing money. There are ways to be critical of revolutionary movements that are honest and resonant. He could've also written a movie about what *actually* derails movements: Not people getting old and losing their principles (a right wing talking point), but revolutionaries being snuffed out by the state and squeezed into penury by capitalism. (Eg sell out or die). Instead, he just ... made up a completely disjoined fantasy world. He might as well written a movie that said "the real critique of revolution is that feral hogs are always getting in the way." Like, it just was completely disconnected from reality. Why even use revolution as a backdrop if you really want to write about feral hogs? Anyway, I just recorded an episode about how the CIA took over the academic left and Hollywood: patreon.com/posts/full-vid…
