The KJV (1611) was translated primarily from the Textus Receptus (a Greek text compiled in the 1500s based on later medieval manuscripts). Modern translations (NIV, NASB, ESV, etc.) use much older manuscripts discovered since the 1800s, such as Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus (4th century). These older manuscripts do not contain those verses. Scholars believe many of these verses were: Added later by scribes (either accidentally or to harmonize similar passages in different Gospels). Copied from parallel passages (e.g., Matthew 17:21 looks very similar to Mark 9:29). In short, Modern translations are trying to be more accurate to the earliest and most reliable manuscripts, not "removing" anything that was originally there.
