Joseph Stalin had a strong desire to see the Soviet red flag waving above the Reichstag building in Berlin by May 1st, 1945, coinciding with International Workers' Day. The flag was raised on the night of April 30, 1945, by Soviet soldiers, just before the May 1 deadline, but fighting inside continued until May 2. The Ukrainian photographer, Yevgeny Khaldei iconic photo (showing Soviet soldiers raising the Soviet red flag) was staged on May 2 using a larger flag, as the earlier one was small and poorly visible.
