April 30, 1945: The Red Army first raised a flag over the Reichstag; that same day, Adolf Hitler committed suicide. Joseph Stalin wanted the flag over Berlin by International Workers’ Day (May 1). This iconic photograph, Raising a Flag over the Reichstag, by Yevgeny Khaldei, was staged and taken on May 2, 1945, recreating the earlier event when no photographer was present, as the building was not fully secured until May 2.
