The world, Europe, and Spain have faced this critical moment before. In 2003, a few irresponsible leaders dragged us into an illegal war in the Middle East that brought nothing but insecurity and pain. Our response then must be our response now: NO to violations of international law. NO to the illusion that we can solve the world’s problems with bombs. NO to repeating the mistakes of the past. NO TO WAR. lamoncloa.gob.es/presidente/int…

A few days ago, the journal eLife published a self-study on the first year of its new publishing model, and it is well worth a look. Here are some notes based on my own experience with the journal as author and reviewing editor: markusmeister.com/2024/03/17/a-y….

I think the real reason AI x-risk has so thoroughly overwhelmed EA is not that it's a large risk to humanity but it's a large risk to EA itself, in that it's a theoretical case that shows the limitations of the EA project to quantify all possible harm.

@Vinncent Federated networks are the best currently-existing attempt to get out of the corporate ownership of public discourse. Mastodon is getting better with each version, check it out. pluralistic.net/2023/08/06/foo…

I am active here now because I think it (indirectly) helps promote a new book, and with Gaza it can even feel like a terrain of struggle. But I remain convinced this place is evil and should not exist. Put differently: oligarchs took the internet from us, and we must take it back

@dePolavieja I discovered these amazing lectures a few years ago and tried to contact the professor to get the exercise sheets, unfortunately with no success.

Our work passed the Sacred Gates and is now Real Science™️! It payed the tribute of humongous APCs and botched layout to please future grant reviewers. But if you are suspicious of peer review, as you should, check out data and code, available online for *every single figure*!

It's not just the loss of low carbon generation, but the additional loss of technology, know-how and even heritage that will end up defining Germany's nuclear phase out as one of the most irresponsible policies of modern times
Decouple Media@DecoupleMedia

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN This weekend, Germany will complete their nuclear exit. They saved the best for last. This is the story of the Konvoi reactors, arguable the finest reactors ever built. Their loss is even heavier when you realize the original intent of their builders. 🧵

@alvorithm @freetrade42 @prototyperspect @skdh There isn't a "world less" of headaches with radioactive waste with phasing out now, as a storage location for the already-existing waste would also be able take up the extra waste generated in 10-20 years.

@neuralreckoning An admirable decision! Just leaving the rotten system behind has many advantages, but it also opens up the space of possibilities to imagine even better ways of communicating science, taking ideas from wikis, open-source codebases, forums and far more...

The current system of journals and peer review is not serving science. I have therefore resigned from all editorial roles and will no longer do pre-publication peer review. I explain why in this article and in the thread below. Please consider joining me. neural-reckoning.org/reviewing.html
