If they’re going to force the winger gimmick, try him on the other side, think he’d be better there. Still not a United standard winger though. Always maintain he should be fed Patrice Evra tapes.

People will downplay this analysis and say it doesn't matter so much because Chelsea may play a totally different way with their first team players, but I disagree massively. When you coach a game-model, it applies across all levels, and these players have all been involved in Chelsea's first team training, so this is exactly what we should expect to see in future games, even with better XI's. Post-game, Alonso was clearly unhappy with the performance as he bemoaned many issues Chelsea had, and there is no doubt that the execution in every facet of the game was miles below the required level, but what matters to me at this stage of pre-season for Chelsea's long-term trajectory is Alonso's intentions. First, he wants to solve the culture ✅ Second, he is playing a back 4 ✅ Third, his implementation of the back 4 was exceptional ✅ The next step? STICK to these intentions… In this specific game, just because the players were not at the required level for the first 60 minutes to take advantage of that tactical system does mean that we should simply disregard it. Insert better players with the right collective mentality into it and Chelsea will be the best set tactically that they have been in YEARS. This is a very encouraging start for Xabi Alonso in every regard. Long may it continue, because these principles are the key to success. Combine this overall approach with Chelsea's talent and the sky is the limit, and that potential can be reached before you can even begin to imagine if each problem is solved ASAP… 🏆
