Christ’s last words on Earth before His glorious Ascension are incredibly striking: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”

Today we celebrate the great feast of the Ascension, a holy day of obligation, commemorating Christ’s ascension to his Father in heaven, forty days after he broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld.

Today, is Ascension Day in the United Kingdom; and around the world, the traditional 40th day of the Easter season, when Christians recall Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven, 40 days after his resurrection. In the UK it is not a public bank holiday, but it remains a Principal Feast in the Church of England calendar and is marked with services across the country; often outdoors, on hilltops, or even from church towers and roofs to echo the “upward” imagery of the event. The New Testament accounts (primarily Luke 24:50–53 and Acts 1:6–11, with briefer references in Mark 16:19 and 1 Timothy 3:16) describe the risen Jesus blessing his disciples, then being “taken up” from their sight. For Christians this is not merely a farewell but a moment of exaltation: Jesus is enthroned at the right hand of the Father, his humanity now sharing fully in divine glory, while entrusting his followers with the mission that will be empowered by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. UK Traditions Old and New Beating the Bounds: One of the most distinctively British customs linked to Ascensiontide is “Beating the Bounds” (or perambulating the parish boundaries). In medieval and early modern England, parishioners; led by the priest, churchwardens and often the young boys of the parish, would walk the edges of their parish on Ascension Day or during Rogation week. They beat boundary markers (trees, stones, streams) with willow or birch wands to fix the limits in living memory at a time when maps were rare. The walk combined prayer for the land and community with practical neighbourliness. Many English parishes still observe it today, including at the Tower of London (every three years) and in places like Dorset and Wiltshire. Church services and rooftop hymns: Churches frequently hold open-air or tower-top services. Historical accounts and recent Church of England examples record choirs singing from church roofs or towers, symbolising the disciples gazing upward. Feathered and airy fare: Medieval English and European custom included eating birds (pigeons, pheasants or pastries shaped like them) because Christ “flew” to heaven, a light, celebratory touch still echoed in some modern tables. Ascension Day sits between Easter joy and Pentecost expectation. It reminds us that Christ’s departure was not abandonment but commissioning: the same Jesus who rose is now exalted, and his followers are sent outward into the world with the promise of the Spirit. In the UK today, whether in a city parish beating its bounds or a village church singing from the tower, the ancient pattern continues; looking up in wonder, then turning to love and serve the place where we stand.

Ascension Day celebrates the bodily assumption of Jesus Christ into heaven 40 days after Easter. Jesus returns to his Father as the Son, thus uniting his human nature with the divine. It symbolizes the transition from earthly ministry to the glory of God.
