درس ليلى البرادعي لم تتبوأ منصبًا سياسيًا ولا كان لها نفوذ، لم تترشّح في انتخابات و لا تظهر في الإعلام،لا تُعتبَر نشيطة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي ولا تُرى في الصور إلا بين مجموعة . فقط أكاديمية مرموقة متفرّغة للتدريس وإعطاء الأمل للأجيال الشابة في مستقبل واعد. ومع ذلك كانت جنازتها التي حضرتها بالأمس مظاهرة حب كبيرة جدًا. كانت البنات خارج المسجد تُسارعن بفرش السجاد الأخضر صفّا بعد صفّ، وعندما نفدت السجاجيد تصرّف كل منّا بما توفّر،فمن اصطحب سجادته اصطحب ومَن صلّى على الأرض صلّى.أدهشني بين الحضور شاب ترك الصلاة في سبت النور وجاء ليكون في وداعها، وعندما قلت له : معقول أنت هنا الآن ؟ ردّ: دكتورة ليلى غالية علينا جدًا. وفي عزاء اليوم الذي لم أحضره قيل لي إن المسجد لم يكن فيه موضع لقدم، وإن المعزّين بعد صلاة العشاء كانوا وقوفًا في الخارج. أما الذين كانوا يتلّقون فيها العزاء فكانوا بالعشرات وكأن كلًا منهم يشعر أنه الأجدر بالمواساة. ليلى البرادعي بالمقاييس السائدة امرأة متميّزة لكن لها مثيلات وشبيهات، فهي زوجة وأم ناجحة وأستاذة جامعية مرموقة. لكن هذا الحب/ الحزن الطاغي الذي غمر وسائل التواصل وملأ المسجد أمس واليوم.. يعني أن امرأة فريدة كانت تعيش بيننا،وأن هذه المرأة الفريدة صنعَت مقاييس خاصة لندرتها غير تلك التي يقاس عليها،فلا أكاد أذكر تشييعًا مماثلًا لشخص خارج السلطة . ألف رحمة ونور عليكِ يا دكتورة ليلى.. نادرًا ما تعاملتُ معكِ في حياتك .. لكنني عرفتك جيّدًا جدًا أمس واليوم. نيفين مسعد

Yes, I totally agree with Hazem. What are the odds of both SARS CoV 1 and 2 emerging in China? As Hazem mentioned, these viruses are native to natural reservoirs in this area. Human behavior facilitates spillover. To specifically address the examples @Zeinobia mentioned, spillover of HIV, Ebola and Mpox happens(ed) in certain parts of Africa because of human contact with primates. @Zeinobia please google “eating bushmeat’.

@Zeinobia This is likely a coincidence. These viruses are normally present in animals native to that area. Human overpopulation, improvement in diagnostic technologies and the spread of social media make it easier to identify new emerging diseases. @virolvlog is the subject matter expert

@moha_ateia @MarkBlenner The guiding principles are usually the result of assessing the risk to humans. Since the risk of human infection with bacteriophage is minimal (or could be non-existent), I don't think extra precautions are needed.

Does anyone have good resources for best practices working with bacteriophage? I've been in labs that do nothing different, but have heard of labs taking extreme precautions. What are the guiding principles?

WHO statement on reported clusters of respiratory illness in children in northern China WHO has made an official request to #China for detailed information on an increase in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children. At a press conference on 13 November 2023, Chinese authorities from the National Health Commission reported an increase in incidence of respiratory diseases in China. Chinese authorities attributed this increase to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection which typically affects younger children), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Authorities stressed the need for enhanced disease surveillance in healthcare facilities and community settings, as well as strengthening the capacity of the health system to manage patients. On 21 November, media and ProMED reported clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China. It is unclear if these are associated with the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities, or separate events. On 22 November, WHO requested additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results from these reported clusters among children, through the International Health Regulations mechanism. We have also requested further information about recent trends in the circulation of known pathogens including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV and mycoplasma pneumoniae, and the current burden on health care systems. WHO is also in contact with clinicians and scientists through our existing technical partnerships and networks in China. Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in influenza-like illness compared to the same period in the previous three years. China has systems in place to capture information on trends in influenza, influenza-like illnesses, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2, and reports to platforms such as the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System. While WHO seeks this additional information, we recommend that people in China follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, which include recommended vaccination; keeping distance from people who are ill; staying home when ill; getting tested and medical care as needed; wearing masks as appropriate; ensuring good ventilation; and regular hand-washing. WHO will continue to provide updates.

زي النهارده من 20 سنة بالظبط كانت أول مرة أخرج من مصر كنت مسافر من مطار القاهرة لهيثرو في لندن علشان أبدأ دراستي في جامعة كامبردج كنت مسافر لوحدي وسايب ورايا بنتي اللي عمرها سنتين وزوجتي الحامل في ابني كنت مسافر ومش عارف هاشوفهم امتى تاني علشان المنحة اللي كنت واخدها مكانتش بتغطي تكاليف الأسرة ليلتها كنت بحاول أنام بالعافية وبنتي اللي مش فاهمة إني مسافر كانت نايمة جنبي على السرير قبل ما تروح في النوم دورت وشها ناحيتي وقالت: باي تصرف غريب عمره ما حصل قبل كده .. بكيت روحت المطار وأنا زيرو خبرة في السفر معايا شنطة كبييييرة من اللي كانوا بيرجعوا بيها من الخليج وطبعا لفيت عليها شريط لاصق وكتبت عليه إسمي قالولي تقل علشان الجو هناك برد فكنت واخد معايا لبس ”شتوي“ تقريبا نصه اترمى بعد شهر لإنه كان غير مناسب لجو إنجلترا كنت كمان واخد معايا كراسات الامتحانات اللي كنت بذاكر فيها أيام ما كنت معيد ومنسيتش كمان آخد معايا اسطوانات عمرو خالد واسطوانات عليها المسرحيات القديمة اللي بحبها وكنت بذاكر عليها وهي شغالة في الخلفية أهلى كمان أصروا إني آخد معايا علبتين فول وجبنة مثلثات وكام رغيف عيش شنطتي وزنت 45 كيلو والموظفين في المطار صمموا اني أدفع وزن زيادة كان عندهم حق طبعا لإني كنت باستعبط بالشنطة الكبيرة دي اللي مكنتش قادر أشيلها حاولت أتحايل عليهم .. مفيش فايدة .. واضطريت أغير جزء من الدولارات البسيطة اللي معايا علشان أدفع طلعت الطيارة وفاكر كويس اللحظات الأولى بعد الإقلاع مباشرة وأنا شايف منطقة المطار من فوق كنت ببكي وبحاول أداري علشان الناس اللي جنبي مياخدوش بالهم مكنتش ببكي علشان ماشي من مصر .. بالعكس كنت فرحان جدا وقتها إني ماشي كنت ببكي علشان كنت مقبل على المجهول لوحدي ومش عارف القدر هيجمعني تاني بأسرتي إمتى لما نزلت في هيثرو كنت ملبوخ لبخة جامدة مع إن الجامعة كانت بعتتلي تعليمات أروح فين علشان أركب الأتوبيس اللي بيروح كامبريدج وأنا لغتي الإنجليزية حلوة الحمد لله لكن ربكتي خلتني مش عارف أتصرف كويس حطيت الشنطة بتاعتي على تروللي وكانت كل شوية تتزحلق وتقع وأحاول أعدلها كان شكلي مسخرة المهم .. وصلت عند مكان حجز الأتوبيس بس مكنتش عارف أعمل إيه ربنا حط في طريقي موظفة بنت حلال أخدت مني الفلوس وحجزت لي التذكرة زنقت شنطتي في مكان تخزين الشنط في الأتوبيس بالعافية وطلعت ركبت الدنيا بدأت تضلم لكن كنت مستمتع جدا بالمناظر اللي شايفها لو مازورتش إنجلترا قبل كده .. إنجلترا حلوة بكل ما تحمل الكلمة من معاني .. طبيعتها حلوة .. شوارعها حلوة .. بيوتها حلوة .. ما شاء الله وصلت كامبردج ولقيت تاكسي يوصلني الكلية بتاعتي اللي فيها مكان سكني طبعا وهو بيشيل معايا الشنطة كان بيشتم .. بس الحمد لله إني مكنتش فاهم بيقول إيه وصلت عند الكلية ودخلت أخدت المفتاح وروحت على البيت اللي فيه أوضتي المفروض معايا مفتاح وأعرف أدخل على طول .. لكن ضربت الجرس لقيت في وشي شاب طويل ملامحه أوروبية .. عرفت بعد كده إنه من النرويج قلت له أنا طالب جديد .. قال لي أهلا .. وحاول يساعدني بإنه يشيل معايا الشنطة لأوضتي اللي في الدور التاني أول ما رفعها من على الأرض .. بص ناحيتي وقال: انت حاطط فيها جثة قتيل؟ ودي كانت أول مرة أضحك في اليوم ده دخلت أوضتي وبصيت على الربع حيطان اللي حواليا .. وحسيت بوحشة شديدة بدأت أبكي تاني نزلت لقيت الطلبة اللي ساكنين معايا قاعدين في المطبخ سألتهم بلغتي اللي كانت لسة تقيلة: الدراسة بتبدأ الساعة كام بكره الصبح؟ ضحكوا قالولي انت مش طالب دراسات عليا؟ .. يبقى تروح القسم بتاعك وقت ما تحب طلعت أوضتي وحسيت إني ميت من الجوع فتحت الشنطة وطلعت العيش والجبنة وكلت روحت في النوم بعدها من كتر التعب .. وتاني يوم بدأت الرحلة مش عارف ليه بحكي الكلام ده دلوقتي .. بس حسيت إني عايز أسترجع اللحظات دي وببص لنفسي دلوقتي وأقول الحمد لله اللي أنعم عليا وأكرمني بالفرصة اللي غيرت حياتي وعلمتني وربتني صدقني الغربة بتربي! أنا مش نفس الشخص اللي كان محتاس بالشنطة زي النهارده من عشرين سنة ومع كل اللي شوفته .. لكن طبعا الحمد لله على الرحلة بكل تفاصيلها وبقول يا رب ساعدني أكمل
