In other words, one could argue that the first law requires internal energy to be defined locally, for all points in state space and borrowing energy from the future could break that. So, one could prohibit this process from the first law itself without needing the second.

... and intuition would say that it is the second law that prohibits the conversion of random energy (e.g., thermal fluctuations) into useful work. But even in a theoretical limit of a perfectly isolated system, can the first law prohibit "borrowing" energy from the future?

These findings shed light on active olfactory sensing, where odor perception is intimately coupled to odor sampling through sniffs (6/6).

We also found neural markers of this odor induced sniff modulation and found that key olfactory regions such as the amygdala play important roles in capturing this relationship (5/6).

Every day I grow suspicious of whether the most fundamental "truths" can be semantically mapped to language or can just be embodied using those systems within us that are not constrained to single-threaded linear processing.
