0.5 Front in the Workplace In the early 2000s, I joined the Copy Desk of a leading media group. One of my colleagues was 58 year old Siddique. Initially I thought he was just a funny character - every time our eyes made contact, he would give me a 100 watt smile and say "Kaise hain (How are you) Rakesh ji." This would happen 10 times a day. However, I was always polite to him and had conversations with him. After a week or two, I observed that nobody in the office talked to Siddique. I thought it was due to ageism as 90% of the journalists were under the age of 30. Intrigued, I asked a couple of colleagues why everyone avoided Siddique. Their reply was quite disturbing. They said, during the Kargil War (May-July 1999), while everyone was concerned about Indian soldiers, Siddique was openly supporting Pakistan. He would get into loud arguments with the other journalists, blaming India for the war. Even as reports came in that captain Saurabh Kalia was slowly tortured to death by Pakistani soldiers, Siddique said Pakistan was right to occupy Kargil and India should back off. In the midst of a war, Siddique had the audacity to vociferously support Pakistan. And he said all this without the fear of consequences. No action was taken for his traitorous views. And they call Hindus intolerant.
