I've done these benchmarks recently and for v8 it was a ~ 1ns per iteration of a hot loop which is pretty close to optimal. It depends on the shape of the object in the array you are looping over though, if you have differently shaped objects in the array it can make it 3, 4x slower but it's still single digit nanoseconds.

@valigo Whether loops are slow or not is purely dependent if there is a jit compiler lowering into machine code or not.

I'm writing more now and I've settled on writing the shortest articles that get my ideas across, even if it sacrifices some nuance. I have no tolerance for long articles now because how they often end up being AI generated. You really need to earn each word.

This is one of my favorite stored prompts. After finishing a spike of work, I ask it to look back specifically for better data structures. Why not do it up front? We discover what works as we build! And then after we build we clean up.

Once upon a time I was writing some kinda public post for the WebKit project at Apple, and I thought I'd be a little funny and throw in some light-hearted jokes. I forget what the jokes were (100% sure they were cringe by today's standards) but I remember asking Darin Adler to review the post and he said it was nice I was writing in my own voice, and that I don't need to change it just to sound professional. Really made an impression on me. As all of our writing styles now converge in the LLM age, what will remain of my voice? Of yours?

@GergelyOrosz None of what people are describing are loops. A loop is something like “Continually profile and implement optimizations in this repo. Only accept optimizations that result in >3% improvement. Once youve had 3 failing attempts in a row stop.”

What is "loop engineering" to you, anyway? Been looking into this, and also experimenting myself... and I'm not (yet?) buying that it's a new paradigm. But I might just be missing something. Can you share "loops" you regularly use?
