NIMBYs frequently oppose ADUs on the grounds that #ADU residents will overwhelm on-street #parking. Are they right? @cgthigpen and I take a look in our new study in @JTLU2008 A🧵on our findings: 1/11

@AleRigolon Exactly! Love this photo. It illustrates well what @cgthigpen and I found from our survey of homeowners in Sacramento, CA. On average, there's more than enough parking to meet the needs of homeowners and ADU tenants both. jtlu.org/index.php/jtlu… twitter.com/volkerj2/statu…

SO THE THING ABOUT BUILDING MORE ROADS OR MORE PARKING IS IT WILL ACTUALLY MAKE TRAFFIC WORSE BECAUSE WHEN YOU BUILD MORE ROADS OR PARKING IT MAKES IT EASIER TO DRIVE SO MORE PEOPLE WILL BUY CARS AND CHOOSE TO DRIVE AND THEN YOU JUST NEED TO BUILD MORE ROADS AND MORE PARKING WHIC

🧵I spent days going through every deed of purchase that the Texas Highway Department made in the 1950s and 1960s as it assembled land to build Interstate 345 through Deep Ellum in downtown Dallas. 1/

Happy to share my 3rd article on coverage of traffic crashes with @DrTaraGoddard and @cgthigpen. In this paper, we shift our focus from journalists to the police, who write the press releases that inform crash reporting. Check out the Guide and learn more about our process👇

Transport friends, the transportation planning research center at Rutgers (@VTC_Rutgers) is making several big hires in the coming weeks. Check out their openings here: vtc.rutgers.edu/work-at-vtc/ and then come work with me (or nudge your excellent grads to do so)! 💡🚲🚸🚂💡

On parking and ADUs: ">75% of [Sacramento] households have enough off-street parking available to park all their vehicles. [Combining] off- and on-street parking supplies, we find that households have ~1.6 more spaces available than they have vehicles." doi.org/10.5198/jtlu.2…

Happy to announce my latest publication with @jmbarajas @AlexaDelbosc. For my followers who know me for my work on the language of crash reporting, this is a bit of a departure. Why do I think this work is important? What did we do? A thread. 1/12

"The evidence of induced demand is 'strong' and ... it is often 'ignored, underestimated, or misestimated in the planning process.'" - @YahooNews cites TRB's TRR journal. ow.ly/gkkh50IzQh1 See the TRR article here: ow.ly/ZekE50IzQoe

Induced demand is not an intuitive concept when it comes to transportation policy and planning. This article from @GOVERNING features @_amy1ee clearing up why road widening projects only bring more congestion. Read more here! 👇🚙💨 governing.com/now/why-the-co…

@aceckhouse I wouldn't be surprised either if it's lower in Berkeley. Other research has indicated lower %s using garages for car parking in cities with older and smaller housing stock, like SF, NYC, and various UK cities.

But what if those ADUs replaced existing off-street parking (e.g. garage conversions)? We estimated there would still be 7 surplus parking spots on the block even if all 5 ADUs replaced off-street parking: 12 surplus spots - 5 displaced cars from garages = 7 surplus spots. 10/11
