But the best ones don’t just move — they communicate. Weekly updates aren’t just a formality. They’re a signal. - They tell your investors that you’re in control. - They tell your community that you’re alive. - They tell yourself what actually happened this week. Let’s break down what makes a great weekly update, and why each piece matters. 1. TL;DR This is the heartbeat of your update. A short, high-signal summary that even the busiest investor can skim in 10 seconds. Why it matters: • Most readers will only read the first 3 lines. 2. Highlights – Show Progress This is where you show momentum. New feature shipped? Closed a deal? Got featured somewhere? List it here. Why it matters: • Founders are judged by motion. • You may not be growing revenue every week, but you should be creating movement. • Momentum creates belief. And belief compounds. It’s also a chance to remind yourself that you are making progress, even in the chaos. 3. Lowlights – Show Backbone Show up and be authentic. This is a window for the community to help you. Share what didn’t work, what slipped, or what you learned the hard way. Why it matters: • Builds trust through transparency. • Gives your investors and advisors the opportunity to help • Shows maturity. You’re not hiding. You’re owning. This is often the section that makes the difference between “this founder is a hype machine” and “this founder is a real operator.” 4. Key Metrics – Let the Numbers Talk Every good update has hard numbers. Pick top 3 metrics that define your startup’s current health. Don’t hide them. Why it matters: • It shows you know what to measure. • It shows how fast you’re learning (or not). • Metrics beat narrative over time. Signups, txs, retention — pick what matters now in your stage, and track it every week. Consistency is more important than big numbers. 5. This Week’s Focus – Share the Plan One line on what you’re focused on next. It creates clarity for you and sets expectations for everyone else. Why it matters: • Investors love founders with a clear roadmap. • Community members like to feel looped in. • Creates accountability (even soft accountability helps). If you said you’re fixing onboarding, and next week’s highlight is “Onboarding V2 live” — that’s proof of execution. 🤝 Asks – Make It Easy to Help You This is the most underused part of weekly updates. End every update with a clear, specific ask. The more targeted, the better. Why it matters: • People want to help, but they don’t want to guess how. • “Know anyone hiring?” → Meh. • “Looking for a senior backend engineer in India who’s worked on Rust or Go” → Much better. Whether you’re fundraising, hiring, looking for intros, or asking for feedback — say it. 7. Shoutouts – Spread the Credit Celebrate teammates, users, contributors, and random people on Twitter who helped. Give them a line of love. Why it matters: • People love recognition. • It builds a generous culture. • It makes people want to help you again.
