DAILY SITUATION RECAP: The White House says Moonshot AI distilled Fable. Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), has stated that Moonshot’s Kimi K3 was developed using distillation of Claude Fable 5, in violation of Anthropic’s terms of service. In addition, Moonshot has access to Nvidia GB300s in violation of US export controls. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is threatening sanctions and Entity List designations, which could block Americans’ free use of Chinese open-source models. Nearly 200 Silicon Valley companies, including Y Combinator, have signed an open letter asking the government not to block access to these models. OpenAI’s projected compute spending through 2030 is $750 billion. $20 billion of this will be a new data center called Project Camellia outside of Savannah, Georgia that will use 3.2 GW of power between 2028 and 2032. They’ve hired Brent Mayo, one of the top people at SpaceXAI responsible for building the Colossus data center. OpenAI also has major compute commitments with Microsoft Azure, AWS, and Oracle. AMD and Anthropic make a compute-for-investment deal. Anthropic will buy up to 2 GW of AMD Instinct MI450 data center chips starting in 2027. In exchange, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic subject to deployment milestones, and potentially help financially backstop future Anthropic data center leases. Anthropic will increase its political spending from $20M to $40M. The company is backing Public First Action, a nonprofit that supports regulations like safety evaluations, transparency requirements, whistleblower protections, and export controls. Public First and its affiliated super PACs famously backed Alex Bores in his candidacy for New York’s 12th Congressional district. OpenAI launches Presence, an enterprise platform to help businesses build AI voice and chat agents for customer support, IT, sales, HR, and more, another example of labs moving into the application layer. SpaceXAI is building a new data center in Texas that will be as big as or bigger than the existing Colossus data center complex in the Memphis area, around 1 GW. Samsung will invest in Mistral at a $22.8B valuation in an effort to reduce European and Asian dependence on US frontier models. Travis Kalanick launches Atoms, a new robotics company with a $1.7B investment led by a16z. The company is focusing on automation of food preparation and service, mining, and transportation. Atoms has been in the works since 2018. Kalanick was previously co-founder and CEO of Uber. Trump nominates a critic of big tech to the DOJ. Adam Candeub has been nominated as assistant attorney general leading the DOJ’s antitrust division. He previously wrote a portion of Project 2025 calling for stricter antitrust enforcement against the tech industry, and is a longtime critic of Section 230, which gives tech companies broad immunity from liability over user-generated content. Stripe’s revenue is growing substantially. The company made $6.8B in revenue and $3.2B in free cash flow in 2025, and did $2B in revenue in Q1 2026 alone. Stripe, along with buyout firm Advent, recently offered to acquire PayPal for $53B. Google increases its spending outlook. It now projects $195B-205B for capex in 2026. Also, Gemini now has 950M monthly active users, just slightly less than ChatGPT. Written by @theojaffee. Read more at our link in bio.
