Learning the ORB: Opening Range Breakout The Opening Range Breakout (ORB) is one of the most popular intraday trading setups. What is the ORB? The ORB is defined by the high and low of the first 15 minutes of a trading session. For the NY session, that’s 9:30–9:45 AM ET. These two levels - the ORB high and ORB low - act as key reference points for the rest of the day. You can also use a 5 min or 30 min opening range depending on your style, but the 15 min is the most commonly used. The 4 things that can happen Once the ORB forms, price will do one of four things: Breakout - price breaks above the ORB high and never touches the ORB low Breakdown - price breaks below the ORB low and never touches the ORB high Double break - price tags both the ORB high and ORB low in the same session No break - price stays completely inside the ORB range for the entire session Why it matters The ORB high and low set the tone for the session. Knowing which scenario is most likely on any given day gives you a clear framework for: Directional bias -are you looking for continuation or reversal? Entry timing - when does price typically break out? Profit targets - how far does price tend to extend beyond the ORB? Stop placement - where does your trade idea get invalidated? But don’t just take my word for it - the numbers are insane. I ran the ORB strategy through Monte Carlo simulations on $MNQ (5-min timeframe) over 78 trades. Result? 96.9% of simulations passed a $50k prop firm eval.
