As much as I like Poland and admire its economic miracle, I’m really shocked by what is happening there right now. 1. With €44 billion, Poland was supposed to be the biggest beneficiary of the EU SAFE defence funds. Unfortunately, it became the only country in Europe that rejected these cheap European funds designed to fundamentally strengthen its domestic defence industry capabilities. Even the extremely pro-Russia and Eurosceptic Viktor Orbán accepted them. 2. The funds would have been a game-changer for the Polish defence industry, providing a solid foundation for deterrence against Russia and a huge boost to Poland’s economy. 3. The right-wing, pro-Trump PiS party, the main opponent of the SAFE programme, didn’t offer any serious financing alternatives. They seem to prefer spending billions on defence purchases from US companies instead of building a strong Polish defence industry and boosting the Polish economy. 4. Most worryingly, they ignore that, due to the Middle East conflict, US defence companies are completely sold out and won’t be able to deliver military equipment for years. This is a severe and direct threat to Poland’s military security. 5. PiS outdoing even Orbán in self-destructive, EU-hostile rhetoric and actions puts Poland’s defence capabilities in danger. Why should France or Germany defend Poland against Russian aggression when PiS is running an unprecedented, hysterical anti-EU and anti-Germany smear campaign? It is simply inconceivable how Poland, a country so frequently threatened by Russia, took such an existentially irresponsible path, especially after being attacked or even partitioned by Russia so many times in its history.
