If you haven’t seen it yet, @CorticalLabs just had lab-grown brain tissue play DOOM, and that’s only the headline.
The real story is what it signals: biological computing could be a serious path past AI’s looming power bottleneck.
AI training burns enormous energy (GPT-3 reportedly used ~10 gigawatt-hours). Meanwhile, the human brain runs ~86 billion neurons on about 20 watts.
This isn’t sci‑fi anymore. Biocomputing is moving from papers to product, real fast.
❶ Wetware is real
Researchers are building 3D biological processors from stem cells (organoids), with myelination and glial cells, ingredients that enable richer learning and memory than simple neuron cultures.
❷ Neural networks that teach themselves
In 2022, ~800,000 neurons learned to play Pong by reducing “information entropy.” Biology self-organizes toward goals without the brittle training loops silicon depends on.
❸ Computing with atoms, not electrons
An artificial neuron based on silver ions (not electrons) delivers a tiny footprint (~4 μm² per neuron) and energy-efficient learning baked into the hardware, closer to how brains actually compute.

FinalSpark and Cortical Labs are commercializing biocomputers. FinalSpark runs workloads across 1,000+ organoids (free for research). Cortical Labs sells the CL1 (~$35k) with remote access via Python APIs.
❺ The race for the “minimal viable brain”
Scientists are mapping the smallest neural architectures capable of intelligence, with an eye toward replacing animal testing and building precise models for neurodegenerative disease research.
❻ The sentience question is no longer theoretical
As organoids become more complex, some show activity patterns resembling infant EEGs. That raises hard ethical issues: donor rights, consent, and whether these systems could experience distress.

We've spent centuries building machines that mimic intelligence. Now, we're at an inflection point where we're building intelligence that mimics life itself.
