The whole show just exposes how out of touch the creators (Ramla Ali and Sabrina Alba) are with actual Somali people. Ten years ago this tv show might have landed. Today it doesn’t. A single Somali woman who’s “fed up” with her “backward” culture and falls for a Jamaican man who steps up and raises her three kids might have felt fresh once. But that storyline now sits against real cases that are still fresh in people’s minds. There was the Birmingham scandal involving a Somali mother who already had a child from a previous marriage, then married a Jamaican man who went on to repeatedly rape that child. The case was serious enough that a known Birmingham sheikh, Abu Khadija, got involved and tried to stop it reaching the police and courts, even claiming to officers that the mother was mentally ill. She eventually left the UK with her child. Then there were the two Somali teenagers, Iman Ali and Hoda Mohamed, arrested in Jamaica for drug smuggling after their Jamaican boyfriends put the drugs in their bags without their knowledge. And the pattern continues young Somali girls killed by foreign islander partners, and only last month another Somali woman, Iman Khawane, killed by her foreign partner. Yes, some Somali women have successful marriages outside the community. But the overwhelming majority of the stories involving single mothers and foreign stepfathers have been painful, especially for the children. This show feels like an attempt to rehabilitate that image and rewrite the narrative. Two successful Somali women who married non Somalis are using the language of progress and liberation to frame Somali men as the problem and outsiders as the solution. There is also a wider point worth making. Right wing racism is usually open and therefore easier to recognise and reject. Liberal racism is harder to push back against because it arrives wrapped in social justice, care, and “raising awareness.” It hands out awards for lopsided portrayals and then tells you to be grateful. The classic example is Captain Phillips people will still say, “You should be happy that out of thousands of Somalis they interviewed, Barkhad Abdi got the role, he is such a nice guy and a great actor,” even though most of us could see the caricature clear as day. That kind of racism becomes dinner table conversation instead of something people feel free to call out. This show falls squarely into that category. It will be sold as breaking barriers and challenging traditional norms. The real question is what people are actually going to do about it.
