anyways, this post and the thoughts in it were inspired by the war constantly affecting the stock and commodities markets 🤣

they say intelligence is the ability to change your mind. i've changed mine twice now on the same war, and i'm no longer sure whether that makes me thoughtful or porous. i was against the iran war at first. for the good reasons: wars metastasize, regimes harden under bombardment, the people you claim to be liberating are the ones under the flight paths. i held that position comfortably, from a distance. then i met an iranian girl. here in dubai, who got out. and she told me things that don't make it into the discourse. not the headline atrocities, which are almost too big to feel, but the small ones. the texture of living under it. what it does to a family over decades. and i felt my position dissolve in real time, because how do you sit across from someone like that and tell her the regime that broke her life should be left alone in the name of your principles about sovereignty and escalation. so i changed my mind. and it felt like growth. it felt like the anecdote had corrected the abstraction, like i'd finally touched the thing instead of theorizing about it. but here's what's been bothering me since: one person's testimony is evidence that the regime was monstrous. it is not evidence that the war was wise. those are two different claims and i let them collapse into one because the emotional force of her story was so much stronger than any argument. and now i'm second guessing again, and i notice the second guessing is also being driven by proximity: by the same mechanism that moved me last time, just pointed the other way. which raises the uncomfortable possibility that i don't actually have a position. i have a nervous system, and it responds to whatever suffering is closest. i don't think the answer is to stop listening to people's experiences. the abstraction needed correcting. she was right to correct it. i think the answer is something harder: holding her story and the case against the war in the same hand, at the same time, without letting either one annihilate the other. accepting that "the regime is evil" and "this might have been a mistake" might both be true, and that the discomfort of holding both isn't confusion. it might be the only honest place to stand. and this is where my second guessing hardens into something closer to conviction: whatever this war was sold as, it isn't that anymore. the language of liberation has quietly given way to the language of leverage: oil, minerals, shipping lanes. you can tell what a war is really about by watching what the victors reach for first. nobody's reaching for the iranian people.
