Forbes wrote of her “I have only to add a few particulars about my extraordinary present ‘the African Child’ – one of the captives of this dreadful slave-hunt was this interesting girl. It is usual to reserve the best born for the high behest of royalty and the immolation on the tombs of the decease nobility. For one of these ends she has been detained at court for two years, proving, by her not having been sold to slave dealers, that she was of good family. She is a perfect genius; she now speaks English well, and has a great talent for music. She has won the affections, but with few exceptions, of all who have known her. She is far in advance of any white child of her age, in aptness of learning, and strength of mind and affection”

This is 🤯 Some women have such incredible lives it is almost impossible to imagine how they endured. I guess sheer willpower, determination and self belief. Another lady who comes to mind is Sarah Forbes Bonetta 🧵
Sam Dalrymple@SamDalrymple123

Possibly the granddaughter of the Emperor Akbar, she converted to Christianity under the influence of court Jesuits, was kidnapped by Portuguese pirates after being expelled from the capital, and was sold as a slave in the Phillipenes before eventually being trafficked to Mexico.

If you build a road to nowhere then it doesnt matter if there are a bazillion cars, no one will use your road. The lack of car is not the problem. The fact you built a worthless road is. The road is only valuable if it enables people to gain value from it. Being on a road, driving on a road, those things are not valuable. Sure, you can pay people to drive on your road. Give them cupcakes. But that is net-negative. There is no new value being created, and it's costing you. People are happy (with their cupcakes.) You can even count the cars and convince yourself your road is valuable. But it is not. Sure, you could build a church at the end of the road yourself. You could even create a cult for the church! A financially incentivized cupcake cult! But that's not creating insane value, especially long-term. The value of the road only exists as long as you, the cult leader, are convincing people to drive to your church. If you want to create limitless, insane value you don't pay people to drive to nowhere, nor do you build a church at the end of the road. You put a bunch of resources at the end of the road. Building materials. Tools. Educational resources. Electricity. Water. Internet. And people. So many people. People who want to build things. People who value community and working together and improving things. Kids who dream and don't know what is impossible. They will build all sorts of things. And other people will join them because its more valuable if more people build together in the same area. And all those people also have needs. For themselves, and for the things they are building. You never think about building a church, or what to stock in the shops. Your job is not to do that. Your job is to keep the road in good condition. Make more lanes. Add lights. Make sure people have everything they need to create new value and stay the fuck out out of the way. Don't shut down the road. Don't block the lanes. Don't neglect the road in favor of your church. Don't create signs saying "CASINOS AT THE END OF THE ROAD!" bc you will end up with 5 bros building 5 casinos and no hospitals and no houses. If you do it right, you will have so many things at the end of your road. Churches. Shops. Restaurants. Sporting events. Concerts. Parks. Trees. Offices for running the shops and concerts. Houses to live in. Furniture makers for the houses. Schools. Hospitals. And obviously you will have people walking, biking, and/or driving on your road all day, every day. Then your road is valuable. Invaluable even. Forever and ever and ever. Even after you die people will maintain and improve the road. Not bc it's a fancy road or bc there are cars. But bc your road allows people to access valuable things, and to create new value for themselves and others.

And this just popped up on my timeline “ServiceNow CEO says unemployment for new college grads could "easily" reach the mid-30% range due to AI.” x.com/polymarket/sta…
wallisi.eth L• 🐸 🦊🛡️⚡️@wallisi

A possible AI jobs scenario: 1. It starts with entry level roles and hiring freezes disproportionately affecting Gen Z men. They can retool and pivot. US, UK and India affected first. Small effect on tax base. Higher youth unemployment for a time. 2. It then moves to white collar admin, marketing, HR, design and process which disproportionately affects women. I think they can pivot. Affects everyone globally. Starts to affect the tax base in the West. 3. It then moves to white collar analytical and professional positions disproportionately affecting older workers. I don’t think they pivot and leave the labour market or significantly reduce earnings. The west gets most of the impact as they lose higher bracket tax payers At every stage of the process if someone wants to hire the question posed will be try AI first and let’s see. People need to re-skill to be able to be self employed using AI. The levels of mental health problems will be off the charts for those unable to pivot. Anti AI movements could grow. My worry is the K shaped economy just keeps getting worse for quite a while. I wonder if AI companies eventually get nationalised. On the flip side once we are through this phase we move to a period of intense efficiency gains and productivity increases both digitally and physically, improvements to people’s lives everywhere, deflation and an age of abundance. It will just take time to filter through. Governments need to plan for significant changes to their revenue sources and encourage entrepreneurship
