@markwgilson Rapid swing in Hennepin county in 2020 from growing about 10k a year to loosing 10k a year. Looks like mostly to the suburban counties?

@cremieuxrecueil consider the 5th option. scroll past the question. the none group more likely to not participate. Also factor children's books, many parents of small children that read 20 books a week. ...also liars.

@blueboatmom @YureiKurosawa @JamesCantorPhD Yes for the GD towards male 2 year measure- 67% vs 54%, but the GD towards female were very close - treated vs not. It is sad that all 4 GD groups end up over 50% psych. morbidity.

"Among adolescents who underwent medical gender reassignment, psychiatric morbidity increased markedly during follow-up—rising from 9.8% to 60.7% in feminising gender re-assignment and from 21.6% to 54.5% in masculinising gender reassignment." Ruuska 2026 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ap…

if I remember in the study they don't separate by treatment. They start the timer at the initial meeting with a gender specialist and then note if they receive any medical treatment but not specific to which one. Anyway my point stands, this study ignores many variables that are very important in measuring success of the treatments. It also doesn't compare patients in the Finnish system to other protocols. And again, the vast majority of evidence shows that this healthcare is beneficial. And most importantly the actual patients will tell you it benefited them. For some reason SEGM and other anti trans people and groups want to completely ignore the patients themselves unless they show regret. anyway I hope you have a great rest of the weekend. I'm going to go play in VR with my spouse :)

📰A new Finnish study reports that youth gender transitions (under age 23) did not improve mental health symptoms. For some youth, medical gender reassignment may have had a negative impact. Link ⬇️ /1

@SilentSkyZero @segm_ebm I also observe that all 4 GD groups converge on the 54-67% morbidity range regardless of treatment at the 2 year measurement.

@SilentSkyZero @segm_ebm Plausible scenarios. Although appointments with gender transition teams were excluded. And the increase in morbidity after 2010 seems counterintuitive in your construction.

@SilentSkyZero @segm_ebm You are a careful reader. Any theory on the headline finding of the study we are discussing? The treatment group swinging from 10% to 60% severe psychiatric morbidity? That is a lot of distress- fair to look for answers.

The thing about the CASS review is it was commissioned to justify bans to begin with, and she ignored most of the positive studies claiming low quality. Her findings were not that she didn't find evidence of benefit, in fact she even said there are patients where this care is obviously beneficial. But her findings was that the evidence was not "high quality" which is a very specific term as lots of medical protocols are not founded on "high quality" evidence. Her final conclusions were that (paraphrasing) She found no real evidence of harm and most data, even if positive was low quality and she recommended a trial to really find the answer. Of course now the people who cheered and mostly misrepresented her findings, are trying to stop the trial. Also, here's another interesting fact. In Utah Republicans tried to do the same thing. They commissioned a study to justify banning. In both cases the conclusion was already decided and they just wanted a report or study they could point to. The interesting thing is the study in Utah came back showing that trans healthcare was beneficial. Republicans ignored it and went forward with the ban. The vast majority of evidence shows positive outcomes.

@ThatOneNuge @JamesCantorPhD You can also compare to the untreated dysphoric group. They do not show this large increase in severe psychiatric morbidity that the medical treatment group shows.

@YureiKurosawa @JamesCantorPhD It is a study of groups. Specifically the group of gender dysphoric patients that received medical transition treatments. Rather than finding this treatment group more healthy the group is doing much worse than the unaffected control and also the untreated gender dysphoric group.

@JamesCantorPhD That study compares different groups of people rather than tracking individuals before and after surgery. That means it can’t fully control for baseline differences So it shows correlation, not causation. also not one of these people were reached, just took online database

@SilentSkyZero @segm_ebm Cass did not find a vast majority of evidence showing improvement after medical gender reassignment and neither did this study. To the contrary finding the majority of these patients doing worse after 2 years. The limitations section agrees with some of your concerns.

Two things, first, the vast majority of evidence do in fact show improvement after this medical care. Regret is low and the people who went through this treatment will tell you they are happy they did. Orgs like SEGM get paid to cherry pick and misrepresent studies to bolster anti trans arguments. Second. Caring medical providers do in fact explain risk and set reasonable expectations. To say they don't simply isn't true. As for this specific study there are several variables missing that would impact the conclusion that SEGM wants from this study. One, I mentioned about how they don't compare the impact going through puberty actually had on the trans patient. Two, they don't control for social stigma or family support Three, there is no data on the patient's socio economic standings. Four, They didn't break out the patients who have medical GR by what exact treatments they got and time differences between them. Five, They also looked for two years after initial contact, not after GR treatment its self. And finally, the Finnish protocol is more restrictive than informed consent or gender affirming standards of care in the US. and it also does not measure for how that might have negatively impacted the outcomes either. For example potential wait times, additional hoops to jump through, etc. If I missed something in the study let me know, but, there is a ton of relevant data missing. Of course SEGM won't mention any of that.

@SilentSkyZero @segm_ebm People under 25 shouldn't be treated as children, but a caring medical provider should warn young adults considering gender reassignment. The treatment may not help, and indeed may cause harm.

@walpsbh @segm_ebm yes but this is still well after the damage of puberty which creates cascading mental health issues. If we want to say people under 25 are still children then society should do that for everything. Not just trans healthcare. But we don't do that

@segm_ebm Important to note most of the cohort were adults at the time of referral. It would have been interesting to see the difference between those referred prior to ending puberty vs those referred after.

@HakonEgset @AndyMasley That was my thought. If it came up on a college radio station would I pick it up as ai? Oddly robotic voices, but so much music has modulated and pitch corrected voices.

Don't you find the voice oddly robotic? I'm probably primed to interpret it that way given I know it's AI generated, but it feels pretty distinct to me. A blind test would be interesting. Although I imagine it's not too hard to find human made music that sounds AI if you tried, not sure what the baseline should be.
