During the construction of the transcontinental railroad, trains departing from Fort Hays, Kansas, would frequently encounter large herds of bison as they traveled westward. In response, the trains would either come to a halt or slow down to match the pace of these slow-moving creatures. At this point, the train windows would simultaneously open, and a barrage of bullets would be unleashed from the locomotive, resulting in the killing of the bison on the spot. Some passengers would even venture onto the train's roof for better aim. Regrettably, the majority of the bison carcasses were left to decay. By 1867, the Kansas-Pacific Railroad even promoted "hunting by rail" excursions. However, this marked only the initial stage of the bison extermination process on the Great Plains, where their population once exceeded 30 million. As the 19th century drew to a close, the number of remaining bison in America had diminished to such an extent that the U.S. Army had to intervene to safeguard a herd of only 25 bison in Yellowstone National Park to prevent their extinction.
