Kenya Launches National Carbon Registry, Signaling Entry into Global Carbon Markets Kenya has officially launched its National Carbon Registry, marking a major milestone in the country’s climate governance and positioning it to participate more effectively in international carbon markets. Speaking during the launch ceremony in Nairobi, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa, described the registry as a “landmark achievement” that strengthens transparency, accountability and credibility in Kenya’s carbon market framework. She said the platform would help the country fully harness opportunities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement while safeguarding national interests and promoting sustainable development. “The registry gives Kenya’s green economy a digital heartbeat,” Barasa said, noting that it would eliminate double counting of carbon credits and ensure that value from carbon trading flows back to communities and national development. The National Carbon Registry serves as a centralized system for tracking, authorizing and reporting carbon credits generated across sectors, including forestry, renewable energy and land-based carbon storage. According to officials, it provides proof of ownership for emissions reductions and guarantees that each verified carbon credit meets national and international standards. Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, said the registry represents a critical step in strengthening Kenya’s institutional readiness for global carbon markets and transforming natural capital into a driver of economic growth. He emphasized that Kenya’s carbon credits are sovereign assets protected by law and designed to deliver tangible benefits to communities. Ng’eno added that over the past three years the government has developed a comprehensive legal and institutional framework, including amendments to the Climate Change Act and the introduction of carbon market regulations, to support a high-integrity carbon market. Principal Secretary for Forestry, Gitonga Mugambi, noted that the new system builds on the Kenya REDD+ Registry launched in 2025 and integrates forest-based emission reductions into the national carbon accounting framework. The interoperability between the two systems will enhance transparency, prevent double counting and strengthen alignment with Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contribution targets. Officials said the registry is now fully operational and will support the government’s broader climate agenda, including large-scale tree growing and landscape restoration, while boosting investor confidence in Kenya’s carbon market. The government also signaled that the registry will help attract international climate finance, create green jobs and support community livelihoods, positioning Kenya as a leader in Africa’s evolving carbon market. On her part, Henriette Geiger, the EU Ambassador to Kenya, commended the Government of Kenya for its leadership in delivering what she described as Africa’s first national Carbon Registry. She noted that at a time when some countries are retreating from climate commitments, the global community must intensify collective action to sustain climate momentum. Geiger emphasized the need to scale up climate investments and strengthen equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms, particularly for communities in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), who remain the most vulnerable to climate-related shocks and disasters. The event was also graced by Valentin Zellweger, Switzerland’s Ambassador to Kenya, alongside other distinguished dignitaries. Remarks were delivered by Maren Kneller, Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Germany in Nairobi, as well as the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Board of Management led by Chairperson Emilio Mugo and Director General Mamo B. Mamo, among other officials. #CarbonRegistryKe #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction

@Africa_WaterAmb @WWF_Kenya @UNESCOWWAP @KeWruas @WWF Currently only 36% Kenya's Transboundary river basns are governed by operational cooperation agreements, this means that nearly 2-3rds of shared basins lack formal management, development of Transboundary Water Allocation Plans is critical .

We must move from awareness to #action. Every plastic bottle, every illegal discharge, every encroachment weakens our lifeline. Protecting our rivers, and wetlands is not a choice it’s a responsibility we all share, today and for future generation #EndPlasticPollution

In celebration of #CitizenScienceMonth, @KeWruas and our partners @WWF_Kenya @WRA_KEN @UN_WWQA @Earthwatch_Eur , @ciwab_kenya are excited to host a national workshop featuring 49 dedicated citizen scientists from six basin areas across Kenya. These passionate individuals are actively monitoring our freshwater sources through the Citizen-Led River Health Assessment (CLRHA). The insights, best practices, and lessons learned shared by our citizen scientists underscore a crucial truth: storytelling is a powerful vehicle for change. We must effectively translate the lived experiences of communities facing the water crisis—specifically the challenge of pollution—into discussions held in boardrooms and government halls. The evidence-based data presented by these community scientists reveals a stark reality regarding the state of our rivers, highlighting the significant role that human activity plays in their pollution. Today, our citizen scientists, line Govt agencies and the Academia will collaborate to develop an actionable plan with clear strategies aimed at transforming local community attitudes towards freshwater sources. The goal is to shift the perception of rivers from mere dumping grounds to vital allies that support our survival on this planet. We invite development partners and philanthropists to join us in this transformative journey as we work together to protect and preserve our precious water resources for future generations. Let’s create a ripple effect of positive change! 💧💚 @MOWSI_KE @nature_org @water_witness @NemaKenya @Africa_WaterAmb @UNESCO @WWFSverige @NLinKenya #Catchment2Tap #LeadingTheChange #Sdg6 #Target632
