China’s message on the next UN Secretary-General is clear: The UN should not be a rubber stamp for empire. It needs a leader committed to the UN Charter—capable, impartial, and ready to defend the interests of developing nations. A genuine international order cannot tolerate the abuse of power, including attacks on sovereign states or the use of “security” as justification for mass destruction. The UN was created to prevent the powerful from dictating the fate of the weak. If it fails at that, it becomes not an order, but an empire in a conference room. The next Secretary-General should not bow to power—but stand firm against it.
