To all fans of the max-relative entropy: We have updated our paper on smooth relative entropies with some major improvements. All bounds we give in our main results are now tight, improving on essentially all previously known one-shot inequalities.

Prof. Chen Ning Yang, a world-renowned physicist, Nobel Laureate in Physics, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor at Tsinghua University, and Honorary Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University, passed away in Beijing due to illness at the age of 103. Thrilled to share that I start @EPFL @ICepfl this week as an Asst Prof of Computer Science and Physics! We'll work on quantum algorithms and learning theory, and probe the computational limits of observing physical phenomena. 💻⚛️Towards a physical theory of computing!

Benchmarking is important in the quantum era, like LINPACK for supercomputers. We provide an overview of quantum software stacks, explain the benchmarking suite by Nation et al. for evaluating current software capabilities, and discuss benchmarking for advancing quantum computing

🌟Excited to share our work on identifying the Hamiltonian driving quantum evolution with only few black-box queries. We develop protocols using tools like quantum signal processing and proved its optimal sample complexity via quantum information theory. See @chengkai_z 's thread

Proving optimization guarantees for transformers is hard, even if just training on seq2seq pairs for which we know some small transformer achieves zero test loss. In practice gradient descent just works. In theory, it's open to prove *any* efficient algorithm succeeds 🥲 1/
