@aashisjo I don't think it's an either/or. We should not ignore securing access to basic technologies to relieve some burden of unpaid work on the expectation these people will have to flee their homes due to climate change. Perhaps more feminist-commons approach would be a compromise

For example, I personally think it is more urgent to safeguard the right & ability of people to migrate to escape hostile & unlivable conditions than ensuring every household has a washing machine & refrigerator, which cannot move with them when they need to. 11/

A new paper by degrowth scholars @jasonhickel & Dylan Sullivan suggests we can ensure public luxury & techno-scientific advancement for all with the right policies. But it ignores the already visible & accelerating impacts of climate & ecological breakdown on such ambitions. 1/

@BarryESharp @jasonhickel The benefits are highly uneven - lifespans have not doubled for all social groups. Some developments made possible by fossil fuels are essential, others are not (and highly destructive). The ability to differentiate is crucial to minimise the worst eco and social impacts

@ware_sarah @jasonhickel And yet we have grown our population to 8 billion people and lifespan has doubled since the turn of the century thanks to fossil fuels.

@BarryESharp @jasonhickel That may be true but thousands of people die each year from pollution, ecosystems are suffering biodiversity loss, water is polluted, etc. there's so many reasons to change our current economic systems

@jasonhickel It is estimated by the IPCC that it could take millennia for the climate to change trajectory, even if we reached net zero today. When it eventually changes course, they cannot predict what that change may look like.

@jasonhickel democratic control over production, huh? so you’d like us to vote in a totalitarian dictatorship? is that genuinely what you’re calling for? just call a spade a spade, brother, be a proud communist out in the open don’t hide it

@bitcloud @jasonhickel How so? Degrowth doesn't advocate economic contraction where needs are not met. It advocates for a more differentiated understanding of growth and limits than the current system

@heikelehner @0xSchnitzel If you think degrowth and recession are the same thing then you have not engaged with the topic sufficiently. @RBarnthaler responded to your tweet linking a range of articles detailing Eco-social policies that align with degrowth principles and look nothing like recession.

@0xSchnitzel 1) Weil sophisticated.

@MortenStostad @UCBerkeley Someone (probably not me) could argue that a rising top 1% share is a reward for entrepreneurship that also benefits lower share brackets, in absolute terms. Do you have or know of a graph that depicts this (positively or negatively)?

This semester I've been teaching "Economic Inequality and Growth" at @UCBerkeley. This is a thread with some of my favorite graphs. First, the headline everyone's-seen-it graph: falling then rising income inequality in Anglophone countries.

@T_Cortazzo @ecomEddie 100% also if Mike happened to have one or more kids his time would have to be organised completely differently and he wouldn't be able to pour every dollar into his own business with a goal of $1million, he'd have to settle for a roof over their heads, food and medicine

@ecomEddie Most people who come from nothing lack 2 things that Mike does not lack.. 1. The previously acquired skills & experiences to pull this off. 2. The belief and confidence that you can pull this off. “Anyone” can’t accomplish this without acquiring the skills & belief.

A picture paints a 100 words episode 1 million. This year, I will personally pay more tax than T-Mobile. Meanwhile their CEO gets about 300 times more than me, most of which will be tax sheltered. The one thing we all have in common. Everyone knows the game is rigged.

This is what happens when you run out of hotel rooms. Soon, cities will run out of schools to vacate. Then they will come for your homes.

BREAKING: Buses are now pulling up to @JMHSBklyn and dropping off illegals. School is closed tomorrow because illegals will be sleeping in the school’s gym. This is disgraceful! NYC is prioritizing illegals over Americans.

@EmmaDep @Hyannis321 @MikeCarlton01 Geez. I am speechless. Your response terrifies me. I condemn all violence, as should we all. The nature of the response to the Oct 7th attack is disproportionate and we are witnessing extreme loss of lives and brutality. Shameful

@ware_sarah @Hyannis321 @MikeCarlton01 Same questions again and again…if idf wanted to massacre them the war would be over by now and all 2m would all be history. Btw 75% of Gazans supported the terrorist attack on 7/10, that makes them all a target. Let them enjoy the after party I say!

@EmmaDep @Hyannis321 @MikeCarlton01 "the aggressor must be eliminated" - statements like this justify the massacre of thousands of children and babies? Where is your humanity? Where are the aggressors and why can one of the most well-funded militaries in the world not differentiate between civilians and terrorists?

@ware_sarah @Hyannis321 @MikeCarlton01 Let me explain…the event of 7/10 was never going to be a one off, as admitted and articulated by the terrorists themselves. The severe, intense and lethal response is needed to ensure 7/10 remains a once only. The aggressor must be eliminated. Oh how I wish it never happened!

Yesterday, Israeli forces killed an 8-year-old Palestinian boy by shooting him in the head. His name was Adam al-Ghoul. If this was a 8-year-old Israeli boy shot dead by Palestinian forces, there would rightly be uproar. There's none here because Palestinian lives don't matter
