The Ombudsman raises serious concerns about children's rights in a letter to the HSE CEO. Our Budget Submission 2024 calls for urgent attention to be paid to children's disability services. Unacceptable waiting lists have existed for years and have been compounded by major issues with recruitment and retention of staff. The budget should fund a comprehensive workforce planning strategy, this should involve addressing the retention of staff through improving conditions and ensuring pay parity. It should also ensure that the voice of children and their families are at the centre of any improvements to services and take a rights-based approach. We are concerned at short term fixes such as moving therapists to special schools. Whilst some families welcome this, understandably, it will not fix the more systemic issues. The whole system needs to be resourced properly and any child who has significant needs should be a priority no matter what location they receive their education. irishtimes.com/health/2023/08…
