Currently in Nigeria working on #phd research. Academic twitter (or academic X ??), what are two things you wish you had known before/while on field research?

@BibliophileVic I hope you enjoyed it! It was a very cold but sunny morning in Rome when we recorded it. You have reminded me to have this on our to-watch list for Christmas!

Fashioning the Self in Slavery and Freedom
UPDATE: One of my insightful followers @azzah1 pointed out that the photograph I shared earlier this week drew inspiration from Francis Davis Millet's 1883 painting "Reading the Story of Oenone." Millet sold the painting to the then brand new @DIADetroit in 1883, making it their inaugural acquisition. Six years later, photographer Frank N. Tomlinson took this photo in Detroit, most likely after seeing Millet's painting in person. It portrays four African-American women replicating the dress and poses in Millet's painting. In the all-black reprisal, however, the central figure makes eye contact with the viewer.
