This is a fair analysis to be honest.

@DPJHodges @jamesinsurrey The kangaroo committee found no direct knowledge of Boris misleading the House. He was found to have inadvertently misled the House. Starmer purposefully misled the House and is now trying to rewrite the Oxford dictionary.

OK, we need a clear answer from Government on this now. On Palintir Darren Jones just said “this was not a meeting in the traditional sense”. Keir Starmer specifically told the House on Monday “that was a routine meeting”. So which one is lying.

No.10 now shifting the goalposts. Trying to subtly change the line from “Keir Starmer didn’t mislead the House and break the rules” to “OK, he mislead the House and broke the rules a little bit. But not as much as Boris Johnson did. So there’s no need for an investigation”.

In tomorrow’s Mail on Sunday: * Angela Rayner tells MPs “it’s now or never” to oust Starmer * Burnham allies say they are now ready to press the button on 8 May * Streeting allies say the local elections will prove the need for a new leader who can unite the party

Again. The idea Starmer will be able to "move on" from the Mandelson scandal is for the birds.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Next Tuesday is set to be an absolute juggernaut in Westminster as Keir Starmer faces a day of intense scrutiny over the appointment of Lord Mandelson * First up we have Sir Philip Barton, the former perm sec at the FCDO, who is expected to directly contradict Starmer's claim that no pressure was applied 'whatsoever' over Mandelson's appointment * Barton strongly opposed appointing Mandelson. He was concerned about the way Dame Karen Peirce, the outgoing ambassador, was being treated and though it was a mistake to replace her given that she was personally liked by Trump and his administration * Barton was concerned about Mandelson's suitability for the role and thought it carried significant 'reputational risks' * He also agreed with Lord Case, the then Cabinet Secretary, that vetting should be carried out before the appointment was made. He was overruled by Starmer * Then we have Morgan McSweeney, the PM's chief of staff. He will be questioned over claims - which he denies - that he told Barton to 'just fucking approve' Mandelson's appointment * He is expected to say that the discussion, during a Zoom call, centred on his frustration at the failure to secure a departure date for Peirce. He will deny it represented pressure * We can also expect McSweeney to be asked about his stolen phone and the missing WhatsApp message. And why there appears to be no official record of the PM's decision * Lastly we have the possibility of a vote on whether to refer Starmer to the privileges committee for misleading the Commons. Ministers and opposition parties look likely to grant it It's going to be one hell of a day...

Important line here from Ed Miliband. "I think it is now time to move on". I'm being told the argument Keir Starmer will be presented with by Ministers over the coming days is that it's become clear it will simply not be possible for him to move on from the Mandelson issue.
Fred Dimbleby@freddimbleby

"It's been a damaging week" Ed Miliband tells me about the impact of the Mandelson saga on a visit to Sheffield I asked if he had had conversations with Andy Burnham or Angela Rayner, but he said he is focusing on his job @itvcalendar
