@seanspicer Technically the big 4 have unlimited insurance on customer deposits. Not the same for everyone. And Trump eased the regulations on SVB size bank. Stress tests would of flushed this out.

@michael_gilman Well. The reason behind the demand is that money market and short term T bills were paying higher yield. So. Naturally people wanted to get a better deal. Banks have been slow to up yields. I just put $ in and am getting close to 4%. So, with or without sale, the mkt speaks

@wbenson Right. But my point is that it seems that it was the announcement of the bond sale that triggered the panic. If instead they'd just announced a "routine" equity raise to "strengthen their balance sheet," wouldn't the reaction have been different?

Q for you financial types re: SVB. I understand that they were squeezed by depositor outflows and a balance sheet that was perhaps overweight in long-dated bonds that could only be sold at a loss. (cont)

So here's my question: Why not just do the second thing? Raise equity, keep the bonds, hold them to maturity, and never have to announce the loss? What am I not understanding? (~fin~)

@RepAdamSchiff Trump signed an executive order loosening restrictions. Stress test would of caught this.

In 2018 under Trump, I opposed Wall Street’s effort to loosen regulation over banks like Silicon Valley Bank. But it passed, and now ordinary workers and families may pay a very heavy price. This is an oversight failure — in addition to a failure by the bank’s management.
