@MattOsterndorf My preferred (mostly joking) explanation was that Yoda spoke very standard when he was a junior Jedi. But a couple decades into being one of the top Jedi Masters he decided he could stop being a striver. So he let the old hometown accent loose as hard as he wanted.

This is something that the original trilogy did much better, largely by ditching the alternative diction when it doesn't sound good.

My contribution to May 4th discourse is that my son and I have been watching Maul: Shadow Lord and it's been fun, though I still don't understand how he (Darth Maul, not my son) survived being bisected in The Phantom Menace.

@Historycourses I got on a brief kick with that a couple years ago, mainly because I had heirlooms to identity and catalog. For a few months, I was learning all sorts of subtle marks to distinguished among pre-1870 Colt revolvers, plus many cheerful facts about cheap knockoff Belgian shotguns.

I'm gonna become a firearms history nerd, like the kind who can identify the difference between percussion caps on 1853 Enfields and 1861 Springfields.

Yes, there was a time in my life that I read thousands of pages of Barth because I was convinced he must be worthwhile since everyone praises him so much. When I figured I must be missing something, I dove into Barthian scholarship. What a waste.

What are you talking about? I read half of the Church Dogmatics, along with his Protestant Theology of the Nineteenth Century, the Romerbrief, his back and forth with Brunner, two separate volumes of essays from evangelicals on Barth's theology, the works of McCormack, Hunsinger, and several other Barth scholars, and a bunch of other things. I've probably read more Barth than I've read Thomas Aquinas (a truly insane thing to do, honestly). I've read more secondary sources on Barth than anyone other than Luther. And, no, I still don't like him. This post also wasn't even about Barth. Calm down man.

@michaelbd @DrJordanBCooper My div school theological survey courses were built around Barth AND Rahner. I grew increasingly less impressed with each as the year progressed.

Under the first amendment, the White House may not pressure ABC to fire a comedian because of his jokes. Melania is entitled to her opinion, of course, but unfortunately, this administration has shown itself more than willing to pursue their enemies for their speech.

Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community.
