Seems like a very interesting results. Training variational quantum algorithms is NP-hard -- even for logarithmically many qubits and free fermionic systems arxiv.org/abs/2101.07267 Seems like I have some night reading to do.

Fault-tolerant quantum gates are usually found by hand. Here we show how to automatically find them for any given qcode using a variational circuit Ansatz. For codes that we tested we find almost all gates known in the literature as well as some new ones. scirate.com/arxiv/1912.100…
