The Pantheon in Rome was completed around 125 AD. Its dome spans 43.3 metres in diameter. At the time of its construction, it was the largest dome on Earth. It is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome on Earth. No rebar. No steel. No post-tensioning. Just concrete, and extraordinary engineering. How it works: The dome is not uniform concrete. It's a sophisticated gradient structure: • At the base: heavy travertine and tuff aggregate in the concrete • Moving upward: lighter pumice and scoria aggregate • At the oculus (the open hole at the top): near-pure Roman cement The wall thickness decreases from 6.3 metres at the base to 1.2 metres near the top. The coffered ceiling (the recessed panels) reduces mass without reducing structural integrity. The oculus – 8.7 metres in diameter, open to the sky, isn't a weakness. It's a structural release valve that eliminates the tension ring that would otherwise crack the dome. Engineers in the 19th century tried to understand how the Pantheon was built. They couldn't fully explain why it hadn't collapsed. In 2008, MIT researchers finally modelled it computationally. Their conclusion: the Roman concrete's composition means it actually gets stronger under compressive load over time. The engineers who built it didn't have the mathematics to explain why it worked. It worked anyway. Intuition + experience + the right material = 2,000 years and counting.
