@OscarWildPod @sophia_cim @sauerkraut27 Such interesting takes on Oscar history and favorites! Sophia, I’m with you: Faye Dunaway was EPIC and towers above all others in her performance in “Network” which I consider the best American film of my lifetime. I love listening to your podcasts. Happy holidays!

@OscarRunnerUp Imagine the Best Actress films of this and the previous 4 years were all released in 1988. Who would have won: Field, Page, Matlin, Cher or Foster?

@OscarRunnerUp How did Matlin squeeze past the others, all big players? Did she have the “new face” luck like Joanne Woodward, Anne Bancroft, Simone Signoret, etc.?

@OscarRunnerUp Thank you for your reply! I almost agree and your logic might still persuade me… Thank you so much for your podcast. I really enjoy your insights and rapport with your guests except for Joey Gentile—he’s a monster on the level of Addison de Witt! (Just kidding!)

@westsidewoof Already recorded this episode so I'll just answer here. I'd probably rule out Hepburn and Field. Maybe Page too, despite her narrative. So between Streep and MacLaine, I may actually lean MacLaine considering she had the perfect combo of narrative/performance and Streep just won.

@FritzandOscars ALL magnificent performances in strong, strong films. I remember thinking at the time that Hopkins’ performance was the best of my generation. I wonder if my opinion will have changed.

@OscarRunnerUp I thought Burstyn’s performance was measured and resonant. I agree that the Sam Shepard storyline was not done well, but Burstyn’s journey to grace and compassion was effective and moving. Unfortunately it didn’t have the flashiness needed to make much of a dent in the race.

@OscarRunnerUp Ellen Burstyn should’ve won her 2nd Oscar here imo after The Exorcist. She was very open about how Universal ignored her film in the campaign process for Coal Miners Daughter and pushed Sissy. Do you think studios pitting the money maker vs the performances hurts talent?

@OscarRunnerUp I was born in 1963 and consider “Network” to be the best American film of my lifetime. Never mind that it was so prescient. Faye Dunaway deserved her win for a controlled hurricane of a performance. It may be the Best American Actress performance of my lifetime.

@FritzandOscars Judi Dench. It took her only 8 minutes to steal that confection of a movie and dominate the field. Queen, indeed so.

@OscarRunnerUp Maybe asked before: The Nobel Prize Committees announce winners each year but release the list of nominees only after 50 years have passed. Would it be realistic to lobby the Academy to do the same in each category with the ranking/vote totals of runners-up?

@OscarRunnerUp @JoeyGentile1992 @OscarWildPod @AwardsConnect @awards_watch @JRParham @FritzandOscars @300Passions @MMandOscar @InSessionFilm @ryanmcquade77 @academy_queens CONTEXT: Music videos didn’t really exist in 1975. “Tommy” broke ground & led to the music video form as we now know it. Ann-Margret was well-liked & got the nod for a performance no one had expected from her or seen before in a wild film during a wild era in film. She earned it.
