Mamdani obviously riding crazy fundamentals in NYC during his first year (lower crime, no migrant crisis, a knicks chip, city ambassador for the world cup).
But something for progressives to reflect on... what if the fundamentals weren't as strong? What if he came into office and immediately had to deal with '22 style migrant crisis? Point being, there's a big tension between the left's goals on immigration at the federal level (border decriminalization and very low threshold for asylum seeking) and the conditions that will allow for a left mayor to govern with durable political support.
Brandon Johnson failed for a million reasons, but the biggest reason I heard from city alderman when I wrote up a story on it was because Biden's immigration policy caused a lot of chaos in the city. Voters blamed Johnson. And the Mayor had to redirect city money away from some of his other progressive priorities and towards migrant settlement.

I’ve stayed mum on this race, and I’ll get shit for this but I don’t care — this is a disappointing accusation from someone I have a lot of respect for.
While Claire may have called it a genocide first, she & Antonio have virtually identical views & policy positions on Israel & Gaza. Why would AIPAC choose to put their money behind someone with Antonio’s views on this?
The idea that anyone critical of her campaign must be AIPAC-backed is purely speculative, really cynical & overly incendiary.
I know things are heated right now and it’s crunch time, but there’s no need for this IMO. Run on your records, vision & endorsers.

As a NYC native, Black DSA member, I don't even think this characterization is all that wrong.
But let's talk about the other side.
The establishment LOVES that they have hoodwinked multiple generations of Black and brown voters to support politicians who do jack shit for us.

Since roughly 2010 a large migration of predominately white, middle class, suburban college educated types have descended into urban cities that were cleaned up btw 1994-2010 by reform moderates like Giuliani. Without knowing it, they inherited a safer and more prosperous city. Many from this cohort use their DSA/lefty politics and canvass for these POC candidates as a way to rationalize their presence in the cities and believe that this kind of politics can correct the inherent asymmetry between their smart little NPR life and the Puerto Rican teens selling weed and pressed pills down the street. Alas, their savior politics actually makes things worse for these people.
