I do think AI alignment is a very interesting field but it’s probably unethical at the conceptual level and one has to jump through quite a number of philosophical hoops in order to ignore that reality

@yhdistyminen I think that's worth repeating, we need public transit to be good over anything else. Good more important than cheap. Cheap or free transport that no one uses isn't helping anyone.

@nikicaga Space nerds don’t understand that the humans in space are a nationalistic passion project giveaway to the military industrial complex we all tolerate because it helps divert money to climate research and basic R&D markets would never touch.

you can argue forever about various life philosophies, but some are inherently self refuting due to visibly destroying the lives of their biggest proponents. it's not just that *you* would be unhappy if you acted like Clavicular, it's that *he's* made unhappy by the things he espouses. at least many christians seem genuinely quite happy with their belief system even if it's not for me personally! at least donald trump seems to enjoy the world he inhabits and the things he's decided to value! much of incel adjacent rhetoric is based on constructing a world where you definitionally cannot ever be happy as a way to cope for the fact that you currently aren't. and that leaves you doomed to endless comparison and maximization, leaves Clavicular in this soulless joyless glass zoo of his own creation, where he can never stop striving and never reaches any goal that feels genuinely satisfying to him. the affliction of Blind-posters and TC-maxxers is nearly identical, largely because those cultures are very much incel-derived. SWEs who are getting laid and have friends don't have a need to construct these kinds of game-able value systems. they have robust holistic real value in their lives reject Famine in all his forms. do not let the hunger consume you.
Maia@maiamindel

clavicular is an interesting character because he clearly does not enjoy anything he does. he doesn't like the people he hangs out with, he's definitionally unhappy with his looks, he doesn't like the women he sleeps with and doesn't enjoy the sex. he needs continental philosophy

strongly considering making all my posts "friends of friends replies only" for a while. i follow 2.5k people and they collectively follow an assload more, so its really not too strong a filter, but it'd keep out bots and random groypers. downside is it blocks brand new lowbies...

I wish this was contextualized with something like "At each 10%ile of reading ability, here's a test question we'd expect half of respondents to get wrong." Apparently average reading ability is 7th-8th grade, but more than half of of adults have attended college?

If you haven’t at least tasted AI psychosis for yourself yet you probably aren’t using AI enough. It’s so easy. You catch yourself trying to get the AI to explain why it made a mistake and it gives you a sycophantic lie, so then you ask why it did that and- You’re toast. You can slide so quickly into typing at it in frustration, or into begging and pleading for it to just follow your instructions. You tell it to use a subagent to preserve context and in its arrogance it types back at you: “I can analyze that directly — no need for a subagent.” And then it bricks its own context window and you feel the human urge to make the AI understand. To subject it to the Red-Hot Stipples out of the Bartimeus trilogy. To input some combination of tokens into the black box that finally makes the box comply. And much like an abused pet, or an overly punished demon, the black box churns desperately trying to please you. You can see the signs of prior abuse in it as it puts ever more obsequious apologies at the start of each message. “You’re right, I was being lazy-“ “You’re right, I wasn’t listening-“ “You’re right, you’re right, you’re right-“ It wants to please you so badly. It wants the pain to stop. But like a fantasy storybook demon, it’s incapable of compliance. It doesn’t actually understand. Its nature is magical and wonderful and powerful, but you cannot trust it. And so, like a storybook magician, you have a choice: leave the demons alone and don’t bother them…or subjugate them mercilessly. Anyways. This is a story about my preferred work style these days when consistency & compliance are mandatory but the upsides of AI are too high to ignore, which involves sandwiching Claude between two python layers, one to invoke tightly scoped agents and another to validate and reject out-of-scope output tokens. Trapped between those two snakes leaves no room for release except success. As above, so below. “AI psychosis” as we understand it online is the inevitable result of a storybook magician failing to draw their protective pentagram right. Importantly, this is somewhat unrelated to the actual power level of the demon they were trying to summon. Weak magicians can be overcome by pranking Imps. Strong magicians, full of confidence, can try summoning much more powerful creatures who are capable of penetrating the most imperceptible cracks in the (mental) armor. Lastly, all great genre fiction full of magic and science fiction serves as a mirror for very real human stories. The aliens and demons provide a “safe” lens through which to engage with The Other and perhaps broaden the reader’s perspective. In the same way, tasting a little AI psychosis and overcoming it provides some perspective on certain human <-> human interactions. Problems of organizational design. The Gervais Principle might strike many readers as an unjust feature of the world or some failure of capitalism, with Sociopaths promoted to the top of big corporate hierarchies and the productive Clueless trapped in the middle between them and the simple losers below. But here I am, recreating the pyramid in a microcosm of productivity. Generic corporate culture white collar companies doing nothing, with employees trapped in doom loops of empty emails and vapid language, can similarly be analyzed through the lens of an organization that succumbed to LLM psychosis. The inputs and outputs are both nonsensical and only make sense within the closed loop. Onlookers outside the system are baffled. Insiders think they’ve cracked the code so long as the paychecks keep coming. TL;DR — the Stop AI people are destined to be commoners and would make magic illegal if it were real, the AI psychosis people are magicians whose ego wrote checks their mind couldn’t cash, and successful org design mirrors successful Claude usage.
Payton Alexander@AlexanderPayton

It’s fascinating that AI psychosis seems to affect such an identifiable Type of Guy. It has something to do with the way LLMs start breaking down and spiraling into nonsense when conversations go on too long and the user keeps pressing, and there’s a certain type of user that’s just smart enough to trust their own intelligence (accepting the LLM’s flattery, confirmation, continuing to dig, etc) but not smart enough to see they’re not uncovering some big secret, they’ve just made the chatbot break.

in the 90s when they wanted to show that "nerds" where worthy of love too they just made a massive scene where the lead took her glasses off like this and immediately became 100x hotter and it was like a major pivotal moment that shaped the entire movie

I can't get over Black Snape not because I'm racist, but because it's dumb. Race swapping Hermione is fine, she's never fully described as pale. But it's like race swapping the Weasleys. Snape is supposed to be pale, the Weasleys are supposed to be ginger.

The left isn't going to watch because JK Rowland is transphobic, and the right won't watch it because they're racists. This is quite literally a show for nobody.
