Part 3 in our second annual POEMS & PANCAKES series features poet Emily Pérez. Emily’s recent volume of poems, WHAT FLIES WANT, won the Iowa Prize. My pancakes have not yet won a prize, except for the occasional request for seconds. @emilytheperez

Just put in a flagstone patio. Question: do we SEAL the flagstone or nah?

@JeffSharlet Maybe we shouldn’t be looking to corporates to guide our social values.

A top-3 trout for me. Such a fight in swift water. There was a small waterfall just below where I hooked it, and on several occasions I was very close to having to Brad Pitt that thing downstream over the waterfall.

@juliaioffe As an American in Europe, I agree 100% but am equally perplexed.

I have always noticed this, and especially these days, when I'm not in the U.S. as much. Why do Americans speak SO LOUDLY in public spaces? (This then makes the spaces SO LOUD bc everyone is trying to be heard over the other loud people.) Is there a cultural reason for this? /end

Hello from my hotel bar in Brussels. There are 3 ppl at the next table: a British woman and two Americans, a man and woman. They are all speaking, but the Americans are approximately 50 decibels louder than the Brit—and everyone else here. 1/

After the full-scale invasion began, manufacturer Leica Camera AG @leica_camera announced it would be leaving Russia. But an investigation by The Insider shows the company stayed on Russian market and might be supplying binoculars and rifle scopes to Russia that could be used for military purposes. Laser rangefinders and levels from the Swiss company Leica Geosystems are also arriving to Russia through third countries. Leica lists "passion and perfection" among its values. How does financing the terrorist state's war waging capability and killing Ukrainians work with these values? theins.ru/en/news/261823

@whitehead_north @KBAndersen @MollyJongFast I have no idea what your point is but every person at the border is fleeing something much worse than the situation here. If you and your family have been apart for thirteen years due to the immigration system wouldn’t it make sense to be together in the better country?

Been studying up on migration. Some key facts I learned. Hundreds of thousands each year move here by getting standard immigration visas. Another small group, about 40,000 a year recently, are granted refugee/asylum status—what the people now massing at the border want. 1/3

@seattlethough @KBAndersen @MollyJongFast I agree 100%. Ideally, an immigration system should keep dangerous people out. It doesn’t take 15, 2 or even 1 year to figure that out. The process compounds bad policy, making something already dubious, inhumane.

@seattlethough @KBAndersen @MollyJongFast My point is, the absurd Kafkaesque bureaucracy hurts everyone & spineless politicians are more afraid of their primary voters than making any kind of sensible reform.

@seattlethough @KBAndersen @MollyJongFast I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic. In our case, abusing the system would mean having three kids in 15 years just to have chance at a life in a country with a dysfunctional political system, costly health care & rampant gun violence.

Let them enjoy the freedom to express an unpopular opinion - a freedom they don’t have at home.

You're an idiot if you believe the @Chrysler Pacifica commercial it will NOT bring you peace of mind. Imagine a road trip and your battery died in the middle of nowhere bc there are few charging stations. There are WAY MORE gas stations. Go woke go broke.
