Labour give so little of a shit about British wildlife that not only did they not support the absolute no-brainer of installing swift bricks on new build homes, they actively whipped their peers to vote against it, causing the amendment to fail. It’s ‘build, baby, build’ but not for exhausted migrating swifts or, it seems, any other beleaguered part of Nature in these islands.

BAD NEWS💔if the vote had taken place earlier we would have won-Tories (majority) whipped YES but by the time of the vote, support had gone home just like 2 years ago. It is an AGONISING reality. Tell steve.reed.mp@parliament.uk what you think. GUTTED. Labour: what a betrayal 😡

#birds Swifts fly thousands of miles to breed in the UK—only to find their nest sites blocked up. Their ancient forests with nest hollows now gone, they relied on cavities in buildings, but these, too, have disappeared. To stop their steep 2/3rds decline since 1995, an inexpensive swift brick nest box was proposed to be incorporated by law into new buildings—also helping other red-listed cavity nesting bird species. But in a vote last night, UK Labour destroyed a golden opportunity to do this small thing for one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe.

A long journey for a little bird! 🗺️ This Reed Bunting, ringed on 11/02/2024 at Cannock Chase, Staffs, has been re-caught a remarkable 382 km away 😮 by @clydeRG in Cowcaddens, Glasgow on 16/10/25. Ringing really does tell a story. 💫 #BirdRinging #ReedBunting #Migration

Italy's finch hunt BANNED! 🚫 The Supreme Administrative Court in Rome has ruled that finch hunting in Lombardy, Italy, violates EU Law! The derogation to shoot 97,600 protected Chaffinches is UNLAWFUL & immediately suspended. A major win for bird protection!

It’s Halloween 👻 time for spooky fun! But remember: fake spider webs can trap and harm birds, bats & other wildlife. 🕸️ Keep your decorations safe by skipping webbing on trees & bushes. Let’s keep the scares fake, not fatal. 🦇🌿 #WildlifeFriendlyHalloween

CABS teams also found two #LongEaredOwls caught as ‘bycatch’ in brutal poachers' nets in #Cyprus. One was so badly injured it had to be euthanised. The other remains under close observation with a vet. These beautiful owls pay a devastating price for the illegal songbird trade.

Another fab owl night. This Little Owl turned out to be from a nestbox 8 miles away. It was ringed as a chick in 2022. It’s our 6th Little Owl of the thermalling season. Also caught our 3rd Barn Owl too! @Derbyshirebirds @SorbyBreckRG

CABS teams, along with our partners from MESHC Anti-Poaching Unit & @SpnlOrg, are on the ground fighting back as best we can. However, we've found the remains of >100 honey buzzards, eagles, and sparrowhawks in the mountains of Akkar and east of Beirut in the last 10 days alone.

An ecocide is unfolding in #Lebanon. On a crucial migratory flyway, hundreds of thousands of birds are being shot by ‘hunters’, including highly endangered birds of prey. The hunting law is not being enforced, and the scale of the slaughter is unimaginable …
