im fully convinced that LLMs are not an actual net productivity boost (today)
they remove the barrier to get started, but they create increasingly complex software which does not appear to be maintainable
so far, in my situations, they appear to slow down long term velocity

The greatest privilege my past success has gotten me is that I can wake my daughter up at 730, eat breakfast with my family in LA, be in SF by 915, have a full day of work until 5, and be back home in LA in time to read and put my daughter to bed. Extremely thankful.

🔥Two things I'm esp excited about 5.4:
1. Unification: we merged our codex & mainline models
2. Efficiency: we brought the efficiency of 5.3-codex to CUA & knowledge work. We only showed 3 such plots in the blog but many of our evals required less time (tokens/tools) than 5.2.
What should we fix for the next model?

I've gotten to the point where if I'm sitting in a meeting and I don't have a Codex prompt running, I feel anxious for "wasting" an hour I could have been making parallel progress.
It's happened super quickly and totally changed how I think.

@adazlian two years later the only thing wrong about my take is thinking 5 years was the most realistic number. this will be solved by eoy if not sooner. every day we still have a job is precious. 😬

@wickman If it makes you feel better I did turn on Gitlab duo integration everywhere and at work we turned on chatgpt integration for code reviews it works pretty good!

A friend of mine is not a programmer and he is building his accounting system with GPT 3.5 generating python for him AI is going to create lots of work for skilled programmers to undo those sorts of messes in years to come.
