@ClickingSeason Bro had support from deep red states and counties, the entire country in the palm of his hand in early 2009, had a supermajority in congress, and everything went to sh*t

Obama’s importance in 2008 was what his election supposedly *meant* which was threefold. By 2016 Obama had exhaustively betrayed all three meanings: 1. we had overcome racial division and race anxiety was, if not yet completely overcome, receding into the rear view mirror 2. divisive tribal politics was over: “there is no red America and blue America, there is only America” 3. decisive repudiation of the establishment as exemplified by the bushes and clintons Complete and total failure.
malmesburyman@malmesburyman

Biden was more important than Obama. Biden had the sniffing thing, the leg hair story, “dog faced pony soldier”. His senility inspired terror in his aides, and as much as he was ‘managed’ by them, he had to be, because he was insane. And that allowed them to do extreme things to try to entrench Obamaism. Obama himself on the other hand was just an uptight closet case whose failures were all incremental. On health care and Iran in particular, his signature policy efforts, all he did was make things a little worse. An all around insignificant man, who bizarrely still has a few acolytes left who just don’t see how little he mattered.

Do the Democrats even have any platform? It seems like the "Blue Wave" hype is just abstract, like they don't promise to actually do anything anymore, it's just supposed to be exciting when they win. I guess impeach Trump, which is totally pointless for them?
Swann Marcus@SwannMarcus89

Long term the Democrats are completely fucked. They keep moving left and 60% of American voters already think the Democrats are too liberal. The party is overwhelmingly hated and it will get worse The Democrats are only able to compete because Donald Trump is still alive

@Empty_America Campaign on lower costs and “healthcare” and then govern like Mao. Republicans better get illiberal fast, because a Dem trifecta will ensure a Republican never gets elected through peaceful means ever again.

what's the most minimal exercise plan that still gets the health and longevity benefits? (i know you can optimize different factors for "minimal"- choose whatever definition seems best to you, i'm curious about the distribution of answers)

@wildernessExpat @mattparlmer The tractor made lots of less-skilled plows-men to lose their jobs. What was hundreds and of jobs became one or two.

The problem isn’t with the Waymo safety record, it’s that driverless taxis break a load bearing part of the post-2008 social settlement The ability to earn an income from driving and delivery apps has kept a lot of people afloat who would otherwise be entirely destitute
Timothy B. Lee@binarybits

Over the last ~100 million miles of driving, these are the five most serious crashes that could be plausibly blamed on Waymo, as judged by @chi_t_williams and me. If you looked at 10,000 miles of driving from 10,000 random human drivers you'd see much worse behavior.

@wildernessExpat @mattparlmer Plenty of welfare benefits already exist. We don’t need to keep jobs around which AI can do. Why? Just because some people can have jobs? Jobs that should not exist? Might as well hire people to dig holes and fill them up again.

@_imdawon @mattparlmer correct that there's no class of laborers that became unemployed forever, but there's been multiple occasions of entire classes having their lifetime earnings permanently decreased by tech advancement its a legitimate concern

@mattparlmer Matt how many times in history has a class of laborers been jobless for the rest of their lives following temporary unemployment? I'm not trying to be an ass, but I can't think of a single instance of this playing out the way you're saying. They'll simply get different jobs.

@vasalex93 @mattparlmer technological advancement does not require sacrificing the less-skilled to a tech-progress god tech advancement combined with prevention of harm to massive swaths of the population *caused by new tech* is probably a good idea

@powerbottomdad1 @startupvon agreed, but the only two options on the table are kinda (1) stop the tech progress train, or (2) don't. if we choose 2, which we prob should, then it's either A) let em be robber barons, B) tax the shit outa em to solve the problems, or C) nationalize it all B might be best 🤷‍♂️

Nobody has a plan for driver displacement, it is dangerous to the technology industry to let this rip without a plan I beg you people to read what @WillManidis has been posting over the last few months, you are not taking backlash seriously enough
Timothy B. Lee@binarybits

Waymo launched driverless service in its 11th city today — Nashville. With the exception of California, all of Waymo's commercial cities (red dots) are in red states — Arizona, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee. Come on Blue America, we can do better than this.

@binarybits @mattparlmer im not in disagreement with that, i just think there's room for a middle ground of "progress is going to happen faster than ever. this will cause displacement harm more than ever. let this progress happen, but there should be methods in place to mitigate that harm"

@binarybits @mattparlmer i mean, maybe. i've never met a dishwasher manufacturer or repairman in my life, it's not a huge field like if 2-5% of the us workforce was dishwashers (like it currently is drivers) i might be more concerned about a dishwasher that loads itself and puts everything away

@wildernessExpat @mattparlmer I don't really think so. Waymo is going to have plenty of employees charging, cleaning, and repairing cars, doing customer service, etc, just as dishwashers put (human) dishwashers out of work but created jobs manufacturing and repairing them.

@wildernessExpat @mattparlmer Yeah, I just don't agree with this. Putting someone out of work by offering customers a better product or service isn't and shouldn't be considered a harm in either a moral or legal sense.

@mattparlmer I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. The inventor of a labor-saving device isn't responsible for finding new jobs for people in the affected industry.

A typical data center uses about the same amount of water as a golf course, and the same amount of electricity as a steel plant. Yet for some people, they have become The Worst Thing In The World. Where does this motivation come from?
CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil@CBSEveningNews

Days after voting in favor of a new data center in Indianapolis, Councilman Ron Gibson says his home was struck by 13 gunshots while he and his family were asleep. He says a handwritten note reading “No data centers” was found under the doormat.

Good time to remind followers not based in the US that in American culture there is a high premium placed on basically “saving face” which may be something useful to think about if you’re trying to figure out how this ends.

every day i get closer and closer to the opinion that dems should institute a test requirement to vote when they regain power. just basic civics/science/history/econ/etc, that any hs senior should easily pass would eliminate 50% of all rw voters instantly
