CLE/DET Game 4 Breakdown 🏀 It took a couple games, but Cleveland's guards finally showed some fight in Game 3 with both having elite moments that propelled them to a win. With that being said, Detroit's comeback cannot be ignored and I think the 2nd half of that game as well as coachspeak has set up a really interesting Game 4 that's critical to both squads. Let's get into it: 1) Cleveland's role player dilemma. Kenny Atkinson after G3: We just got to feel this one out and find a rotation, find the players, the five guys that are going to help us win. I'm usually pretty strict about staying on point with that and trying to distribute minutes. But tonight was like, you got to go get this one. Got to put your best players on the floor. Even if that was 15 minutes straight, doesn't matter tonight. Last game, Strus: +16, Merrill: +9, Tyson: +7, and somehow Dean Wade was the sole negative on the team at -6. This series simply isn't his as his offensive output does not match what the Cavaliers need and both Tyson/Strus can provide the defense he can on Cade. Ran his u9.5 PRA earlier, don't mind 8.5 either if you have. Don't think he's a lock to get benched after a win, he may start, but I don't think he gets to the 22+ min upside we've seen. Just 17 minutes last game, should hover around that range, and that line is too high if so. Max Strus is also a huge beneficiary, but we'll get into him later. 2) JB Bickerstaff vs Kenny Atkinson postgame. Bickerstaff after G3: "They started to attack switches more, and then their guys went to more of their iso game. So again, we got to do a better job being in position to help one another. Well, we just got to shrink the floor more. We were just a little hugged up to our man too much because of their ability to shoot. We just didn't do a better job of being in tighter, and then when the ball moves, we can fly and close out to our guy." Essentially, he wants to crowd the paint and force CLE to give the ball to their shooters. However, Atkinson when talking about his bigs: "We aren't rewarding those guys enough. I know on film tomorrow we're gonna have five where they got deep seals or we have the pocket. We got to involve them more. I want the open threes, no doubt, like open ones, but there's probably five tonight where you're like, man, get to the rim or throw it to our big guys who got a deep seal." The takeaway: feed the bigs inside the paint and reduce their overall 3PA if possible. This sets up an interesting battle and it's worth noting in the 1H that Mobley/Allen had 21 pts and 21 FGA+FTA, but in the 2H, they had just 10 pts and 11 FGA+FTA. This wasn't just a lack of emphasis though as their 2H 3PA also went from 11 --> 19 from the 1H. DET specifically took away the pocket passes and Donovan himself mentioned that when talking. Detroit wanted to remove the bigs from the game in the P&R and funnels shots to the perimeter which they successfully did and it almost propelled their comeback. 3) Who to back from the coaching ideology feud? Well, I think despite Atkinson's desire to give the ball to his bigs, it may just happen in a moderate fashion. If you believe in his coaching (I do not), Mobley 18.5 PA or PRA is one of the best buy lows in the game, but for me, it's hard to get on board that Cleveland is easily going to get this done. I think the more likely scenario is that DET crowds the paint more and forces kickouts yet again from Cleveland testing their spotup shooters. My favorite of Tyson, Merrill, and Strus would be Max himself and combining that with his minutes uptick, his o7.5 pts/o13.5 PRA is very much in play to me. With that said, Harden o6.5 assists also becomes interesting as I think he'd be the better distributor in comparison to Mitchell and his isolation scoring that DET is aiming to stop killed them down the stretch. He finally found ways to beat defenders off the dribble and get going in ways which he hadn't been able to do prior. Merrill himself would be interesting too, but playing through injury is the sole stopper of me wanting to get down on his props. 4) Donovan Mitchell's rebounding. 6 & 10 rebounds the L2 games and this is not by coincidence. He talked about it postgame: "There's so many examples — like tonight, when JA and Ev — Ev had six, Jay had three [rebounds]. The reason why is because he was trying to keep Duren and Stewart and those guys off the board. So somebody's got to come in and grab the rebound, right? That for me was kind of the biggest adjustment. And then when you get the rebound, now you can push in transition." He is emphasizing crashing the glass and his rebounds last game were a large part of his effort. Guard rebounds are always tricky, but he's guarding off ball and the Cavaliers need to be better on the glass, o4.5 rebounds is just too good of a number at + money. 5) Cade's increase in touches. We discussed this before: in G1 & 2, Cade saw extreme pressure with full court pressing and was essentially denied the ball decreasing his touches. He only averaged 77 through the first two games, but had 100 in G3 including 49 in the frontcourt. The reason for this was less pressure by CLE and instead a more concerted effort to slow him down in the halfcourt. Cade got a lot easier LG with way more time on the shotclock and that increased his usage back to normal with 27 FGA and 10 assists. However, Kenny Atkinson did mention that they need to make it tougher on Cade and I think that'll be done with what they introduced throughout. That would be more hedging on screens, showing backside help, and really forcing Cade to make decisions. 8.5 assists is a GREAT number with the number of touches and passes he's now getting, played that one with confidence. Also think it helps other guys on the team including Ausar Thompson who is being forced the ball in some situations to make plays. He won't initiate the offense as much but he will be deferred to and if 11.5 PA becomes available, that's a line I can get behind. At some point, he will avoid foul trouble and if there's more help on dribble drives by guards, tonight could be that game. Summary: - Dean Wade minutes 📉 , Strus 📈 - Detroit wants to help on drives/force perimeter shots, Atkinson wants their bigs to get more touches - Donovan Mitchell's rebounding uptick should stick - Pistons have found ways to get Cade the ball better, his usage will continue to rise --> 8.5 assists is value Overall, expecting a good game here, really excited for this one. Cleveland still has a lot of work cut out for them in terms of the possession battle and will need to fix it tonight if they wanna pull this one off.
