Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how much I’ve had to scale back the number of opportunities I say yes to.
When I was younger, I had time to chase everything. Back then, every opportunity felt like a chance to build my name and my career. Saying no felt like falling behind.
These days, I get access to opportunities I couldn’t have dreamed of earlier in my career. But now, I just don’t have the time to take them all on.
At this point, I’m turning things down almost every week. Not because they aren’t exciting, but because I’d be stretched too thin. What matters more now is giving the right focus to what’s already on my plate. Particularly with Miden.
What’s been most interesting is that I made the shift from saying yes to everything to being far more selective. I didn’t even realize it was happening. It was entirely subconscious.
For the first time, I actually understand that Steve Jobs quote about how focus isn’t about saying yes, but about saying no to the hundred other good ideas. I’d read it so many times when I was younger, but I don’t think it really landed until now.
It’s strange how maturity shows up. Not in chasing every door that opens, but in knowing which ones are worth walking through.
