Full-stack web and occasional indie game dev, former rowing coach. Occasionally dump thoughts on Medium. Still pretend I'll finish writing that book one day...

This will be the year I switch from software development to self-employed Game Dev. I'm documenting my journey over on Medium: @willdwebster" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@willdwebster, with some other writings (game reviews, random musings etc.) Clap, comment or just await my success/failure! ;D

The number of times I've loaded up an old save game and... "Where am I? What am I doing? Why did I leave all of this like this? Why does nothing make sense?" And just decided to start over with a new game....

People don't realize how much strength it takes for you to pull your own self out of a dark place mentally. If you've done that, I'm proud of you.

This indie dev is making a game where you can literally play as Ancient Egyptian wall art. - Switch between a 3D archaeologist and living 2D art - Survive puzzles that fight back - Progress by mastering both worlds It’s called Fresco. This mechanic is genius.

Calling out into the wilderness for help: why might collision randomly stop working in a Unity build of a game. After about 1 hour of gameplay, certain collision just STOPS working for SOME objects (doors and crates, in my case). The only way for it to start working again is by closing the application entirely. This is significant because: the player controller that has this problem is RESPAWNED entirely fresh and new if you go back to the main menu. So you'd think the issue would fix itself once going back to the main menu. Which makes me think it's something wrong with the render pipeline of physics entirely. Some kind of corruption. Any thoughts?

@BellaBaddie__ Might and Magic VI/VII/VIII. Which I could tell you why. I've played through them a countless number of times. Still remember when I first booted up VII many, many years ago. Some of those music snippets just live rent free in my head!

I am genuinely sick of seeing this nonsense. If you didn’t pass basic physiology, please, just shut the f up about optimizing your health. Let’s talk biology: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water-soluble... the second you shove 25 grams of C into your veins, your kidneys start working overtime to flush it out. You aren’t 'loading your system'; you are literally paying to produce the most expensive urine on the planet...! And don’t get me started on the NAD+ IVs. It’s an expensive biochemical fairy tale. NAD+ is a large, fragile molecule. It gets chewed up by enzymes in your bloodstream long before it ever touches a cell membrane, let alone enters the cell to 'recharge' your mitochondria. It makes me so angry because it’s not just a harmless trend, it’s a grift that prays on people who don't know the difference between a real medical intervention and a wellness scam.

A question to #godot #indiegame devs. What approach have you used for save/load of persistent (across game sessions) data? Did you use JSON (perhaps following the Godot tutorial on the subject), use binary serialisation, or something else entirely? What influenced your decision?

On paper, my game is a terrible financial decision: - $10,000 needed in sales to recoup dev expenses. - $50,000 to cover 3000~ hours I’m investing (at minimum wage). - $60,000+ is where it actually becomes profitable. - First solo game, unknown dev That's a huge number, and unlikely to get achieved. But I'm doing it for love, entertainment, passion, a meaningful story, and hopefully, a memorable horror game. That was why I got into this ♥️ #indiegame #gamedev

Which leads back to where I started this week. My game is mostly default grey #Godot panels. If I want the goal of releasing a demo for SteamNextFest in the summer, I need something visually better, even as a placeholder! So here's to actually making a better UI... next week...

Since starting this #indiegame journey in #godot, after being made redundant last year, this feels like one of the few weeks where I've put in an actual full-time shift of #gamedev (including evenings and weekends, so healthy, much sustainable...) So here's a week in review...
