Marking yet another momentous milestone in my writing: This is the 258th & final book for me to reference. It’s a beauty to finish on. #Twitterstorians #2ndMarne.

Setting aside the next four weeks to polish off the final chapter of the PhD. I'm going to turn a blind eye to the badgers setting up home under piles of laundry, and my children scavenging for scraps. Full on 'monstrous selfishness'

I’m lucky enough to be visiting #2ndMarne battlefield next week, with my beautiful wife. Looking forward to showing her the ground and enjoying the food and drink.

We should never forget the non-combatant victims of the First World War. This member of the Chinese Labour Corps, a long way from home, died early in 1919. Killed by unexploded ordnance he was clearing - or by the flu?

@TrenchTrotter Thanks for remembering an important moment in the war. You’re right about the rout, although in some places, esp 5th Army, it came mighty close. Pétain recognised the danger & ordered several divisions north that night.

Not much to see here but what a moment in military history took place here. Manchester Hill, scene of the epic stand of 16th Manchester’s on this day in 1918, stemming the mighty kaiserschlact. This stand was repeated at many locations on that day. There was no British rout.

@kejamieson_ Admittedly my design does need some work. But Dyson had loads of prototypes before he got his vacuum cleaner to work!

@kejamieson_ Tether the swallows to a big wheel, filled with barrels of oil. Give them a push and off they go. Next stop pickup point!!

How many swallows to unload a VLCC & move the oil from A-B? - The average coconut holds approx 500ml (thanks Google) - VLCC = 2 million barrels. - 1 barrel = approx 159l So 318,000,000l to be moved. We need 636,000,000 coconuts & swallows. Unsure if African or European 🐦

@kejamieson_ If they need floatation assistance, just tie the swallows to some balloons?

@kejamieson_ You’re going at this from the wrong direction. Why not just use the coconut oil from the actual coconuts? Works to keep my wife’s face looking beautiful and much nicer than that sludgy black crude oil. The swallows could just pick up a coconut & drop it at the destination.

I’m sad to report that my dad passed away peacefully on Thursday. He’s gone to join my mum. All of the memories of him that have popped into my mind since then have been like this one - fun and never taking himself too seriously. I’m going to miss him terribly.

@InuGamiHayate No one should suffer doing a PhD. I loved doing mine. It was challenging at times, but effort and hard work and perseverance were the key.

The Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner, London. It commemorates the 49,076 fatalities suffered by the Royal Artillery in WW1. It features a 9.2-inch howitzer, & four gunners. One has been killed - his coat is draped over his body, his helmet rests on his chest.

I have cleaned-up this old autochrome glass-plate photo of an American serviceman stationed in Soissons, France, in 1917, during the Great War. It was taken by Fernand Cuville 109 years ago and is original colour, not colourised. Long-term followers may remember I posted a slightly different portrait of this soldier last year, and I'm delighted to have found another!

@GroomB I went into the sea at that very spot in 1996 to rescue a woman trying to kill herself. Pitch dark by the time we came out. And I swam through the sewage outlet, had raging 💩💩 for a fortnight, holiday cancelled.

@YfrontFanzine Always look at these to see if I can spot Peter Rookes with whom I worked for many years but from whom I have lost touch now. I watched York a fair bit when free in the 2000s with him, good memories and hope he is as enthused now as he was then.
