I don't expect a profile piece in a US trade publication to dive into the nuances of the Canadian film industry but let's just say that things are a bit more complicated here.

@AGoldenkind @CoreyAtad @cj_prin If they got out of people's way more $150k would be great, but the stipulations make it tough. As a person that's submitted twice I'd definitely opt for whatever gets more projects made (in BC in particular its patheticly underserved)

@AGoldenkind @CoreyAtad @cj_prin It was extra bad when it was still the $120k tier (with dumb earmarked expenses built in). But yes most of these project get conducted as quasi-volunteer projects for everyone involved, usually like $100 honorarium for 12+ hr days.

@CoreyAtad @cj_prin To problematize this: I’ve heard first hand accounts from many of these sets of extensive labour exploitation, due to most of these filmmakers not being taught nor facilitated into understanding how to ethically work with the smaller budgets

@wrexweed @jakeures Even the most pedestrian indie filmmaking is dangerous when you are trying to make anything above like a mumblecore feature entirely within your apartment. If you film outside in the world and try and pull off even basic things you'll be running risks.
