@mcuban @NateSilver538 Players would just pick big market teams and then make up the difference through endorsements/brand deals. Nike would pay to have the next Wemby play for the Lakers instead of the grizzlies. The real problem is small market teams can only acquire talent through the draft.

I proposed to the nba that the worst team gets allocated cap room, for rookies only , in the amount equal to the 1st pick. Next to worst record, gets allocated the cap room for the 2nd pick, etc. They would then have to convince the rookies they want, to come play for them. Much like they do with free agents when they have cap room. In an NIL world , the best players already have made good money. They would go to teams they think puts them in the best position to succeed. And it wouldn’t be perennial tankers, or poor organizations that they choose. Tanking would get you the most rookie cap room. But you better have your act together if you want the best players

A note on Hubert Davis and #UNC. I was at UNC BBall camp in 2012, Hubert Davis’ first offseason as an assistant. One evening, I heard someone walk past my door in Granville. I poked my head out and made eye contact with Hubert down the hall and quickly closed the door. Hubert trotted towards the room and knocked. My buddy and I thought we were in some trouble for being up “late.” We opened the door and Hubert stood and talked to us for more than 5 minutes. An actual, genuine conversation. “Where are you from? What made you pull for the Tar Heels? How’s your family (that he didn’t know).” It meant a lot to young boys who knew him from ESPN. Both our parents were floored when we called and told them what happened. That night gave my dad nine years of confidence that Hubert was UNC’s head coach in waiting. No one wanted this to work more than the Carolina Family. Hubert is the embodiment of Carolina Basketball. He honored the university and the program’s lore as well as anyone could. He’s a good man. However, results matter, and although UNC never truly fell off under his watch, the Heels simply weren’t good enough. That’s what makes this so hard.
