Really quite the innovation—multicart that bridged home and arcade gaming. Not to mention allowing kids w/out NES to play games!

You are in-fact 100% correct. The entire assembly is a SEGA branded/catalogued part. So the Hantarex my friend had must have been a replacement… it’s very weird that it is widely (incorrectly) reported to use (as-in from factory) Hantarex chassis as well. Regardless, I’m glad you pointed this out. Thanks for the discussion on this 🙏🏼

Sega’s Virtua Racing (1992) has a built-in 16:9 mode. The purpose of this mode was for the Hantarex CRT monitor, which presented in “wide screen” format—making it recognized as the first true 16:9 arcade game. Needless to say, this setting has aged like wine…🍷 🏎️

@windzelda @NEONBitchi Wow! All three versions. Your game room must be huge. I remember playing VR at Megazone in Leicester, England. A huge sit down unit with space frame tubing that held everything together. A roll cage? Huge screen and there may have been a motion element to the rig. Incredible!

@NEONBitchi Thank you for your reply. I myself contacted Nanao because my chassis had stopped working. I even contacted Sega, who confirmed that the DX consoles were indeed equipped with Nanao chassis. However, some screens may have been replaced with those from other brands…

This is an extremely intriguing conundrum. I have been extensively researching since you brought this up and it is very difficult to source information on what EXACT brand or model was used. It’s possible Hantarex was only the chassis? But even this may not be correct. I’ve discovered other widescreen tubes such as Orion (W66MAF183X) and (GNW-36WJ) both of which I haven’t been able to directly connect to V.R. But are distinctly 16:9 CRT’s produced in or around 1992 (Orion possibly later). I’ve been scouring Japanese Coin op journals and retail catalogues for information. The most I’ve found is the Deluxe Motion cabinet features a “Wide Vision Monitor,” which indicates possible Sega branding w/3rd party chassis? The other issue is, we can’t fully rely on what people have due to swaps and supplemental tubes… Even the original manual didn’t have any specifics for parts. Very odd. Although, considering the mixed modeling—and that these were essentially the first generation of widescreen tubes—I guess it kind of jives.

@NEONBitchi Thanks. I own all three models in my Gameroom. Upright, Twin and Deluxe. And the DX's screen is indeed a Nanao. I know other DX owners in the US and the Netherlands who also have Nanaos. That's why the Hantarex intrigues me. 🙂

Japan allegedly used Nanao’s in their twins—not sure about DX, but I’ve heard about people finding a DX that had a Nanao in it. You’re correct about WG in U.S. twins. Also had a friend with one, and I remember specifically because I was intrigued by the 16:9 aspect CRT. Here is the published information available. @NEONBitchi Interesting. To my knowledge, the DX was manufactured in Japan for the global market (no specific US variant like the Twin cabs which used Wells-Gardner in the United States). Do you have any sources or photos ?
