Within one hour there was a squirrel inside it.
Not near it. Inside it. He had removed the lid, which I had screwed on, and he was sitting in the seed, eating it, watching me through the window with the calm of a man who has already been paid.
I went outside. He did not run.
He waited until I was four feet away, and then he left slowly, so that we both understood that it was a decision.
My neighbor was on his porch.
"Yeah," he said. "That's Chunk."
Chunk. He has a name. This war has veterans.
I greased the pole. Chunk fell off the pole four times. Then he stopped falling off the pole, and I do not know what changed, and that is the most frightening sentence I have ever written.
I bought a metal cone. The internet calls it a baffle. It baffled him for six days.
On the seventh day I watched him launch from the fence, clear the baffle completely, and land in the feeder like a paratrooper.
He did not even eat. He sat in it. He was making a point.
I put cayenne pepper in the seed. Birds cannot taste it. Squirrels can.
Chunk ate it.
Chunk ate the cayenne pepper and did not stop and did not slow down, and I watched from the window with my hand over my mouth.
My neighbor called across the yard.
"You put pepper in it?"
"Yes."
"He likes that now."
He likes that now.
I have spent one hundred and forty dollars. I have a squirrel with a taste for spice, a bird feeder with no birds, and a neighbor who waves at me differently.
I have bought a second feeder.
It is for Chunk.
This is not surrender. This is a treaty. I have not decided the terms, and he will not honor them.

According to the data site, which obtained information through an open record request, an investigation began in 2023 after a fatal event when law enforcement officials responded to a 911 call and discovered the deceased child with signs of burn marks on different parts of her body and vomit on the floor of the home. However, the site never mentioned the name of her attacker. Why? Because the m*rderer’s name and charge is being hidden unless you know the exact name to search for and you are able to dig into Dallas County Records. Until today, her attacker was not known to media. That changes now. What happened to Destiny is difficult to read. Proceed with caution…
