Prof @xiangyao_yu has won the VLDB 2025 Early Career Award for his work on disaggregated cloud DBMSs! Congrats to him and his students @scarlet0619, Elena Milkai, Yifei Yang, and @WjhHippo for their incredible contributions! Wisc DB is so proud of you ❤️

Congrats to @bwyogatama for defending his thesis on GPU data analytics! Recently, he’s been leading @siriusgpudb, which is a GPU-native SQL engine built on top of @duckdb. After graduation, he’s headed to @nvidia!

Paris' group's paper, "Output-sensitive Conjunctive Query Evaluation", presents a new algorithm for multi-way joins, which avoids large intermediate results when the output is small. This approach marks the first breakthrough in over 40 years over the Yannakakis algorithm!

Austen's second paper, "Circuits and Formulas for Datalog over Semirings", studies circuits and formulas for provenance polynomials of Datalog programs. Studying provenance in Datalog is practically important because circuits are used in provenance tracking systems!

Yifei Yang's paper "Accelerate Distributed Joins with Predicate Transfer" expands on previous work (CIDR 2024). It shows 1) cost-based adaptive execution strategy minimizing network cost 2) pruning algorithm, eliminating transfers w/out positive contributions to performance.

Congrats to Elena Milkai on defending her thesis on real-time transactional analytics! One of her projects, HERMES (VLDB 2025), enables data consolidation across transactional and analytical engines without system changes. After grad, she’s headed to @salesforce’s DB team!

It was exhilarating to see Dev Ahluwalia present his entity matching startup MadMatcher at the CS Nest Startup Showcase, hosted by @gener8tor! His startup is based on 10+ years of research done right here at Wisconsin 💯🔥
