@LifetimeIP @JonLuskin Yes these are good examples. I’m very aware most are health related. The problem is people say “I don’t need that I’m healthy” even though everyone is healthy right up to the point that they are not.
I’m just saying the accident angle may be more likely to create action.
English

This is the biggest misconception people have about disability. Major illnesses and disease are much more common causes of disability than accidents are.
My sister was permanently disabled at age 53 due to early onset dementia. I have a client in a nursing home who suffered with Parkinsons for 15 years. A surgeon who cannot operate due a stroke. A lawyer who suffered a massive heart attack in his 40's who now has the intellectual capability of a 4 year old.
Here is a table from the federal government. You can see how many people file annually and the causes.

More advisors need to talk about disability insurance.
It's so important.
Unfortunately, it's also boring.
Tax planning gets a lot of attention because everyone hates taxes.
Of course, everyone loves talking about investing - because that's where the money is.
Retirement is something many want, also a hot topic.
I wish there was something alluring about disability insurance - so we could talk about it more.

@jeremyct If you make so little, drive a beater and get a roommate.
And then learn skills that will triple your hourly rate in the next few years.
Then you will have earned that lifestyle.

@BoomerDivvies @MiniRetireMatt This is because nobody aspires to be median

@MiniRetireMatt $100k is a good number but it’s not large imo.

@DadisFIRE @BBGreatMoments @RawlingsSports The 10 year old Easton I used to hit over .400 in high school worked just fine. I knew every square inch of that thing. Didn’t even own it. It was in the high school’s equipment bag year after year.
Kids want the newest equipment. But without the work ethic it means nothing.

@BBGreatMoments My 9 year old kid wants a $450 @RawlingsSports bat.
He knows my rule.
Master crappy tools and Ill upgrade your tools.

@BoomerDivvies We finally got to the point where each of us drive our dream car so everyone is happy. And by the way you would be very disappointed by our dream cars. Not very expensive, just fun to drive.
English

@DadisFIRE This is the way.
Not enough emphasis on role modeling financial responsibility for your kids so they can become financially independent themselves. No greater feeling than seeing your kids earn their way in this world. Great for their confidence too.

On the question of do I believe in leaving an inheritance or are we on a Die w Zero path:
I am 46. We have an estate plan.....We've had it in place for nearly a decade.
My kids arent even 10 yet and each has 4 figures saved up that theyve made themselves......Im teaching them about money.
They will not need mine. (teach a man to fish he'll eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he'll eat forever)
......but they will end up with it.
I am not optimizing for 0. Our investments are outpacing our spending anyway......its not like Im going to go buy a yacht or private jet membership. Im not wired like that.

@MichaelDell Thank you for stating what should be obvious. People with original ideas who do it better than everyone else for an extended period of time are the most common and most appreciated billionaires. I’ve owned many Dells in my life and I’m better for it. Thanks for taking the chance!

Robert Reich forgot the 6th and most common way:
6) Build something millions of people actually want
Robert Reich@RBReich
There are basically 5 ways to accumulate a billion dollars: 1) Profiting from a monopoly 2) Insider-trading 3) Political payoffs 4) Fraud 5) Inheritance Don’t believe the self-made myth.
English

@Rothmus Agree completely although it’s probably bottom 10% if we are being honest.
English

I present this evidence again to make one thing clear:
your life is not worse because of the top 1%
it is worse because of the bottom 1%

@miles_commodore I was very young. I read it and believed it. I lived in a small town. Nobody told me it wasn’t real until today. I’m devastated.

@jeremyct Unskilled labor does not entitle you to middle class living.
Learn a skill. Get good. Join the middle class.
English

around me, places like Chipotle and Chick-fil-A are hiring at about $19/hour.
full time that’s roughly $3,300/month before taxes.
after taxes you’re probably taking home around $2,900.
average one bedroom apartment? close to $1,900.
so most of your paycheck disappears just keeping a roof over your head.
and somehow people still call this a “budgeting problem.”
working full time shouldn’t feel like survival mode.

@nut_history If only winning were that easy
“But I underlined it!!”

@RobertTalisse @SurfThrash You were up to your elbows in Goo Goo Muck and loving it.

@rossiadam @TheJeffPutnam Throwing people over minivans should probably be an Olympic sport. I know I’d watch it.

@TheJeffPutnam I love the calm throwing of a guy and it doesn’t escalate.

Dude who cut off my buddy when he was pulling the excavator up to the gas pump:
“You got a problem?! I ain’t afraid of your bitch ass!”
My 6’8” 360lb buddy: *hops out of the truck, walks over to the guy, picks him up and tosses him over the hood of his minivan, turns around and proceeds to fill up the excavator*
Me sitting in my truck 3 pumps further down: 😂

@RBReich Robert’s lack of understanding of economics is appalling. Somebody community note the shit out of this.
English

@DadisFIRE This is so true.
I get more satisfaction from saving than spending on the majority of things in life.
This allows me to spend freely on the things I care most about that give me joy (mostly experiences with family).
English

Only spend on what makes you happy and not a penny more....because each additional penny spent is worth less than a cent.
This is such a key to life. Minimalism doesnt make people happy. Minimizing waste does.
e.g. If I want bacon on a burger I decide how much more is it worth to me, then I say no if its over that amount.....even though its something I want, I dont want it at a certain price because its beyond the price it takes to make me happy.
Master this (its called satisfice), and life is easy. At least financially.
