From the NWS: SINCE RECORD KEEPING BEGAN IN THE   1890S, GRAND RAPIDS HAS RECORDED -20° OR COLDER ONLY 11 TIMES, MOST RECENTLY IN JANUARY 1994. IF THE CLOUDS STAY AWAY WE COULD MAKE A   RUN AT IT. ONE MODEL GIVES US -24°, WHICH WOULD TIE THE COLDEST READING EVER RECORDED.

Winds have become quite gusty on the summit of Mount Washington this afternoon, with peaks and lulls ranging from 0 mph to 92 mph, as shown on the Hays Chart. Winds are expected to increase further, with gusts up to 125 mph in the forecast for tonight.

Record WARMTH for Jan 9 before the cold air rushed back in. Preliminary new record highs: Grand Rapids 60° (old 57° in 1939) Holland 61° (old 57° in 1939) Kalamazoo 60° (old 59° in 1965) Muskegon set a record rainfall on January 8 of 1.26" (old 0.97" in 1937). #wmiwx #miwx

@wxmeddler @wx_chip Was there a recent incident?

Since I see it making the rounds again: Sonic Anemometers are *very* error prone when particles are in the air (snow,dust,smoke,mist etc.). The ASOS's Vaisala WMT700 series internal QC is particularly bad at spike rejection in these environments.

Thought it was crazy windy yesterday? You're right! The average wind speed at @FlyGRFord yesterday was 22.2 MPH. The last time we had a day this windy was over three years ago on November 30, 2022 when the average wind speed was 23.0 MPH. #wmiwx #miwx @NWSGrandRapids
